As I just told someone else, you need a US DL and birth certificate for re-entry to US but starting next year you will be required to have a passport for air travel to/from Mexico. For land travel i.e. border crossings you will not need a passport until 2008. Check out www.travel.state.gov for more information. Vaya con dios amigo!

It is not yet required to have a passport if you are traveling by land (it will be requred in 2008). However, in 2007 they will require your passport when reentering the US by air.
