When in mexico should we take cash?

I am hearing so many stories about how to take our money. We have 2000 saved up. I don't know if I should use it in my account and just use my debit card, or if we should take cash? Any suggestions?

you can get a prepaid "bux" card . and that way if its lost and /stolen they will replace it. I would take a couple hundred in cash.

Do not carry large amounts of cash. it is better to use your ATM card and take out small amounts as needed. I live in Mexico, but not in one of the BIG touristy spots. Debit cards are not used in my region at all. They may be in the touist resorts. But ATM machines are available everywhere. Just call the customer service number on your ATM card to be sure they allow it to be used in Mexico. Tell them when you are going and to note that on your account, so they will not "shut off' your card when they see it used in Mexico. This occasionally happens. If you have a Bank of America, ATM, you will have no problem. Do NOT bring travellers checks unless you are only going to be in one of the BIG tourist resorts...you will have a very hard time cashing them anywhere else.

bring your atm card & trade for pesos at the bank & remember to check the exchange rate daily as it changes daily

i brought travelers checks & had to go to another location to cash them + pay a small fee

some places will accept visa or mastercard

You will get the best exchange rate using a debit card
Take some cash with you but for most purchases I suggest using the debit card, plus there is less of a chance of being stolen.

♥Hello may i help you??♥
By the time you get there for example:
If you get to Reynosa mexico
there is a cash box and trade the dollars to pesos!

Depends on where you're going..... small town? big city or resort destination? You will need cash for transportation, for small meals at little restaurants or bars, shopping from street vendors or at very small shops that won't take credit/debit cards. Other than that, stick to the debit card either for paying directly or withdrawing $$$ from the ATM and you should be fine!

Travelor's checks are the best. Lots of places in Mexico take them or you can cash them in anywhere for pesos. The checks are also good because if something happens to them (they're stolen, lost etc) certain destributers will refund you the money (American Express). Also, if everything is paid for (hotel) I wouldn't take so much money down. I'd take 1000 at the most. I have 300 and I was more than happy and I was there for a week

Jut use your debit card. Mexico is really known for "stealing" plus it would be better so you wouldn't feel so insecure about carrying so much money.

traveing checks, and get some pasos along the way

I think you have to take American money to trade it for Mexican money you can go to an American bank.
