Unlike ALMOST everyone in the US thinks, Mexico's independece day is not the 5th of May.
Unlike ALMOST everyone in Mexico think, 16th of September is not the day that Mexico got its independence from Spain.
The 16th of September is the day when we celebrate the independence in Mexico. Actually a lot of people start celebrating the 15th of September.
Why we celebrate our independence the 16th of September? Because the 16th of September of 1810 is the day the war for independence began.
Mexico got its independence from Spain the 20th of September of 1821. But then again, we celebrate our independence the 16th of September. |

Jeez, not since that horny moron Bill Clinton embarrassed the entire USA in the 1990s by coming down to spend the 5th. of May with President Zedillo and announced to a stunned crowd "I'm here to celebrate your Independence Day!" have I seen such incredible gringo stupidity from some of you!
Of course its the 16th of September, actually it starts on the 15th and the 16th is more or less to recover (much like Christmas which actually starts on the 24th and we take the 25th more or less to recover....) Others have explained it well.
The strange reason for the incredible popularity of the 5th of May up in the US and its much more minor significance down here in Mexico is actually fairly simple.
After the American sneak attack on the Mexican Republic and their subsequent crushing defeat and theft of almost one half of the country, the poor Mexicans left in the US occupied lands were in a sorry way indeed. They were a brown skinned mostly indigeonous, Catholic, Spanish speaking population now subjegated and dominated by a white skinned, racist, European, Protestant, English speaking population.
The Mexican population of the occupied lands was crushed, humiliated and lost as a race. They lived for many years after abjectly as aliens and second class citizens in the lands which had been theirs and their forefathers for thousands of years. About 15 years of living with this terrible racial humiliation came the stunning news that a French invading army, composed of 100% European trained and equiped professional soldiers had been anihilated by a rag-tag Mexican force only half its size. It was news that changed absolutely the self-image of the Mexicans living in the conquered American territories! It restored their racial pride and wiped out the horrible taste of bile from their mouths after the terrible defeat by the "Gringos!"
What is more important, it could be safely celebrated in the US. The victory was against the French, even the attitude of the "Gringos" was "well, damn good show by your guys!" It really made Mexicans in the US feel good again about just being Mexicans!
Here in Mexico it was different. Yes it was a great victory and yes we really showed "Froggy" a thing or two, but we were in a long war and that was just an early battle. The French ran back to Veracruz, got another army five times larger, came back to Puebla the next Spring and kicked butt! With their allies, the rich, noble Conservatives, the French continued to run Mexico for about 4 years. In the end it took many battles, lots of casualties before the French were thrown out and their puppet Emperor Maximillian was executed before a Mexican firing squad.
For Mexicans the important thing was not just kicking a little "Froggy" butt at Puebla, but the restoration of Mexican democracy and sovereignty and the rightful Presidency of the great Benito Juarez!
For us its a minor holiday. Yeah, ************ the French, that's always a good thing, but its nothing like National Independence, now is it?
For Mexicans living in the US, 150 years ago and today, that battle represents racial pride, national vindication and the restoration of a people's dignity! It should be celebrated with pride and honour in the US! And much better the "Cinco de Mayo" than Mexico's Independence! If the Gringos already hate all the noise we make up there now, just think of how P.O.ed they'd be if Mexicans were celebrating the actual National Day of Mexico instead!
(The ideal situation is to be up there for the 5th. of May, and down here on the 15th and 16th of September.........) |
