I am an American living in Mexico. The only answer you got with ACCURATE information was from "sandtaz." Passports are required after Jan. 23, 2007 for AIR travel only. Starting in Jan. 2008 you must have a passport for any type of transportation into and out of Mexico. You do need to have a certified copy of your birth certificate and a picture I.D. |

New Requirements for Travelers Between the United States and Mexico: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) effective January 23, 2007, all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from Mexico are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Mexico by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries. American citizen travelers are encouraged to apply for a U.S. passport or the passport card when it becomes available, well in advance of anticipated travel. American citizens can visit travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on applying for a passport. |

The new law requires anyone returning to the US via airplane or boat to have a passport. If you are walking or in a car, you do not have to show a passport. Just proof of US citizenship (drivers license or voter registration card). |

US citizens don't need a passport to enter Mexico. They need it to return to the US. Pay no attention to Chuck. He appears on lots of questions about Mexico, saying negative things. I lived there for 10 years, still have many friends down there who are US citizens, and I can tell you that Chuck has no clue what he's talking about. |

No not until December 31st 2007. You will need a drivers license. It is called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The Initiative will be rolled out in phases, they state department will be providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline is as follows:
• December 31, 2005 - Apply the requirement to all travel (air/sea) to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America
• December 31, 2006 - Apply the requirement to all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada.
• December 31, 2007 - Apply the requirement to all air, sea and land border crossings. |

If you are doing it legally, yes. The law changes this month requiring passports for Canada and Mexico. |

First, don't pay attention to the guy with the bullet proof vest remark. Maybe that's a good idea near Laredo or Brownsville, but Nogales and Yuma are a lot more tame.
Yes, you need a passport. If you don't already have one, you can get the application at the post office, but be prepared to wait about 4 months, unless you want to pay for expedited service. |
