Where's a good cheap but cultural place to live in Mexico for a year?

Not some resort, but not Mexico City either. Some place I can get a cerveza and listen to some music and go to an Internet cafe but eat at good taco stands and meet nice people.

Guanajuato, Puebla, Guadalajara, Queretaro, and Cuernavaca are latrge to medium size cities, they have all services and are in central Mexico, which makes it easy to travel to more turistic, archeological, and traditional areas.

San Miguel and Tequisquiapan, are little towns, you'll get all services but it's small and doesn't have so many hang outs.

Oaxaca and Chiapas beautiful but they're having political problems nowadays.

If you like tropical weathers, I strongly recomend Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, Mazatlán or Huatulco. These are modern bilingual small cities you'll find all services.

In most Mexican cities you'll find Starbucks with Internet services, Sport Clubs, Wal-Mart, Fast Food restaurants, Cinemas, Theaters, Bull fighting, Universities, Malls, and the like.

You can get many activity-specialized cities. For example: Valle de Bravo and Tequesquitengo are great lake-cities for water sports.

In Mexico City you can find a really nice place with all the things that u r looking for in a neighborhood called "Condesa" theres a lot of good restaurants there, with a lot of bars and u can find a lot of interesting people... also in Mexico you can try Guanajuato, that´s a beatiful place with a lot of history and culture... is really small but is a really a great place to live in... also near there there´s San Miguel de Allende... or another beatiful place is Valle de Bravo...
hope it helps

GUADALAJARA.

I lived there for three years. A cosmopolitan city complete with everything you want to experience in Mexico. The weather and rentals are good, as is the U S expat community, plus you have a large number of U S medical students attending the world's largest medical school. You are a couple of hours from the coast, an hour from Lake Chapala, and you are in a city full of history and culture.

Colonial cities would be nice. My favorites are Morelia, Guadalajara, Veracruz (plus it's on the beach), Querétaro, Guanajuato, Zacatecas.

San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato...very arty, all services, not cheap. Restored historic town.

There's always Ensenada, Baja California. Restored downtown, lots of cafes, internet. Good food, great fish market. See Hussong's bar, the oldest in the Californias. Reasonable.

Lake Chapala. Its definitly the best place to live for a year. Theres a lot of people that speak english and so you can still manage to live without knowing spanish, but if you want to learn spanish theres lots of classes. If you want more information go to Bestmexicohomes.com

I have been to Guadalajara and second it. Mexican people have told me it is a very Mexican city to them. The birthplace of Mariachi. There is a good balance of traditional and modern.

Guadalajara...I agree with wanderlus...been there many times

In Oaxaca (capital) or Chiapas (Palenque or San Cristóbal). There are a lot of foreigners there, plus Mexicans, a lot of culture and internet cafés. It is not expensive as San Miguel de Allende (only for tourists) or mega huge as Mexico City.

Mexico city but if you are going there then take about 12 million of them with you ,,,,,
