There is a place in Old downtown Cancun (about 20 minutes away from Cancun) that is called Pericos. It is a great experience and worth the trip. The staff are great and they preform shows, which are funny and they get everyone involved. I have been to Cancun 5 times and going to that place is a must. I believe they may have a website but everyone hotel knows about this place. You can take a bus there and than walk about 3 blocks or take a taxi but it will cost more. What I always do is take a bus tell the driver he will tell you when to get off and than take a taxi the rest of the way which will be about $2.00. WalMart is also close to there. You will truly enjoy yourself, if this is your first time going to Xcaret is a must. Just went in August and everything is back up and going, enjoy and check out Pericos

La Casa de las Margaritas...it's located in Plaza La Isla.

Puerto Madero is good but expensive.
Mercado 23 is very good place to eat, but it's not a restaurant; and La Faena (a cantina near the bull fighting ring).

My husband and my favorite is LaParrilla. It is definitely authentic and if you ask for the Spanish menu, the prices are even more reasonable than the English (menu).
They offer many dif. dishes but are famous for the pork they grill on a verical "spit" - with pineapple juice basting it as it cooks. The waiter actually cuts off a portion for your entree if you order a dish including it. It is located right downtown. All the taxi drivers know it, even with my butchered Spanish pronuciation!
