Where do you recommend in Mexico for vacation? |
My wife and I want to take our first solo vacation since becoming parents, and have set our sights on Mexico. This will be for next March. We have been to Puerto Vallarta, and loved it, but would like to try somewhere new. I have also been to Cancun before, but didn't care for it much (too touristy).
We do want to go somewhere with a nice beach, and would prefer somewhere where we can get around on foot mostly, as opposed to cabs or renting a car.
Here's a few specific questions I'd appreciate answers to:
1. Do you like Cozumel and/or Playa Del Carmen?
2. Do you prefer one of those two over the other? Why?
3.If you have done all-inclusives before (which we haven't) did you like it/not like it, and why? Additional Details Some great answers and info so far.
However, $500+/night is a bit out of our range, although I suppose if it's all inclusive that isn't as steep as it sounds.
We would probably prefer $200+ a night not all inclusive.
Thanks! |

I think it depends on what you are looking for and on how much you want to spend on it.
If you like beautiful greenish-blue water and a touristy small town feel with some privicy and indepedence and cheaper shopping/restaurants then pick puerto vallerte.
If you like hustle and bustle pick mexico city.
If you like golf and relaxation pick cabos.
If you like cheap airfares, lots of tourist attractions, and lots of options pick cancun. So fly in to cancun and rent a car. Stay in cancun if you want more nitelife and tourist packed settings. Or stay in playa del carmen if you want a more quiet environment. Then take the boat to cozamel and stay there for a day or two. There's also the aztec ruins that you could drive out to. So I think Cancun/ Playa del Carmen is the best bang for your buck but I've heard from friends who've been there that puerto vallarte and cabos is very nice too.
In fact my friend with the most travel experience told me pick a nice hotel/ all-inclusive in puerto vallarte over the others and also over alcupulco. |

We have been to Rincon, it is North of Puerto Vallarta.
It is a small town, a lovely beach and once you are there it is an easy walk to anywhere in town.
There is another (bit larger) town a short distance away where most services and shopping are available.
Enjoy your vacation wherever you decide to go. |

I love Cozumel, although the cruise ship industry has changed it significantly. I enjoyed Playa del Carmen as well, but it is quite touristy...still, it is more interesting than Cancun. I am a scuba diver, so I am probably looking at different things than you are.
Normally Cozumel has ironshore, but there are some hotels with nice sand beaches (imported I assume) and they have the water park which is great for days at the beach, snorkeling, even swimming with dolphins. Cozumel used to be out of the way and only divers went, but the cruise ships changed everything.
Playa del Carmen has lovely white sand beachs and less currents. There is also a water park that one can go to for the day and trips to the Mayan ruins. The cost there is ver similar to American prices, but the food is great and there are tons of kitzy items for sale.
Depending on your finances, I would also consider Belize. Although the diving there isn't as good, I don't think you would care. It has an off the beaten path feel to it, lots of great food, some great beaches and some awesome snorkeling if you are into that (Shark Ray Alley).
Another place you might consider is the Cayman Islands. They have a beautiful beach, the turtle farm, postcards from hell, and swimming with the stingrays. The water is warm (80 degrees) and clear as champagne. It has a very British feel to it. |

My husband and I went to Mexico May this year and we had a wonderful time. We stayed in Puerto Morelos (about 20 minutes south of Cancun) and it was lovely because it was such a humble and small city that wasn't full of 'tourist' type people. People were there to enjoy their vacation and relax. My husband and I found plenty to do inside the resort we stayed at (Excellence Riviera Cancun), plus the resort offered very inexpensive and sometimes free trips (Cancun, Tulum, Cozumel).
I went to Cozumel to scuba dive and it was such a lovely island with great shopping. I wish I had time to stay a little longer there because I really enjoyed the short time I spent. Close friends of mine stayed at the Cozumel Palace recently and they really enjoyed their stay.
I was in Playa del Carmen for a short while to take a ferry to Cozumel and it had such a beautiful beach. It had that fine white sand and baby blue water. I didn't get to explore much, however it seems like a nice close-knit town.
All inclusive is the way to go in the right resort. Some all inclusives tend to short change one with watered-down drinks and not so posh foods. However, when we stayed at Excellence, the food was magnificent and the drinks even better. My husband and I found many activities and entertainment for free and it made it for non-stop fun. Not to mention Excellence has a site at Playa Mujeres which leaves one even further south from all the tourist action.
I used Tripadvisor.com for reviews and message boards when planning for my trip and all that really payed off for a wonderful vacation!
Have fun! |

Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are just like Cancun. You might try Acapulco. Really nice beaches and places to visit. I rent a Penthouse with a beautiful panoramic view of the entire bay of Acapulco. |

I'd like to recommend Tulum. Click the link below to read reviews of 58 Tulum hotels. My favorite is the Posada Luna del Sur ranked number one in the list. There's only 12 rooms and lots of people love it so you have to get your reservation in early. The Mayan Ruins of Tulum are close by and the ruins of Coba are not too far away. Click the second link to read about things to do around Tulum.
Tulum is about three hours south of Cancun and thus you can find some bargains compared to over-crowded Cancun. I like bargains, that's why I don't like all-inclusives. I figure the all-inclusives have to price their rooms at a price where they don't loose money on the biggest eaters and the heaviest drinkers. Check your all-inclusives price per night and compare it to the Posada Luna del Sur at $64 per night, then figure how much you have to eat, drink and do to make up the difference. I also like finding the little mom and pop restaurants and spreading my money around rather than one corporation getting most of it. |

Personally we have been to the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in the riviera Maya and the Excellence Playa Mujeres just North of Cancun. Both were absolutely amazing. Both were all inclusive, but the Barcelo Maya was a buffet style and the excellence was all separate restaurants. The Excellence had a steak house, Grill House, Chinese, Italian, Mexican and other restaurants - if you are wanting something fancy I would suggest there. Both of these are outside of the main tourist area of Cancun, but we just relaxed the entire time and didn't really do any of the tourist activities.
Regarding the all inclusive - I would definitley go that route. It is so nice to not have to worry about money or leaving the resort to find something to eat. Most of them have a wide variety of foods to choose from and offer unlimited drinks, meals and snacks ( most have free room service also). It would really add up if you had to pay for 3 meals and drinks and transportation to get there... |

Acapulco! It's enchanting.
Mexico City is too crowded, but if you can withstand the crowd, and love soccer, you'll find the Aztec Stadium there very interesting.
BTW, do you like to visit archaeological sites? If so, you can see the Great Pyramid of Cholula at Peubla. It's the largest pyramid in the world by volume.
