Where do you recommend living in Mexico with 2 children, ages 2 and 8?

My husband may get transferred for 2 years. The compnay would prefer us to be in Mexico City or Cancun but my concerns are security and schools. I want to live where it is safe and I would also like to be around others that are ENglish speaking since I know very little Spanish. Please help me with any insight, suggestions, etc.
My children are 2 and 8 and their safety and education is very important to us. We have lived in Texas all of our lives so this would be a huge change for all of us!
Thanks!

Hello, let me help you: I used to work at Westhill Institute (an american school in Mexico city) There are 64 different nationalities in the students body from New Zealand to South Africa, thousands of americans live here and my advice is to contact the school´s principal Mr.Andrew Sherman, he´s american and he will help you clear your doubts .browse through the internet for Westhill Instiitute Mexico City to get the phones and call him or write an e-mail.
Thera are also other American schools :
Americans School Mexico City, Green Gates School Mexico city, Peterson School Mexico city. In case you are jewish Mexico has a 45000 jewish living here and there are nine jewish Schools too.
Americans living in Mexico are not rare at all, almost every city has an American School, it is estimated that more than 700000 Americans live in this country so you´ll be surprised. Good luck and if you have more questions, don´t hesitate to contact me.

Mexico City is a place that has over 20 million people living in it, that's the bad news.
The good is that there are some of the best bilingual schools in Mexico there such as
The American School
Greengates School
Westhill Institute
and a number of others that are just as good. It depends in what area you decide to live in, then find a good school that is near your home, so the children don't have to spend hours in the traffic going from home to school and back, not to mention you sitting in traffic.
Your children will have to go to a private school so you should take that into consideration.
It's also a wonderful place to spend time, since there are over 100 museums in the city.
As for security, it's very much like living in any other great city of the world. You just have to learn to be very careful.
In Cancun you will find many English speaking residents, but also a great number of retired people.

I never been both of them but my husband been in Mexico city. He told me there was very nice and cheap. It is biggest city in the world. Cancun is very nice also and beautiful beach over there but so expensive to live. It is for tourist.

May help you!!

I have been to Mexico City a few times with 3 young children to visit my husbands family and never had any problems except it is too crowded for me. Mexico city is much larger than Dallas,Tx. It has many stores from the U.S like Walmart, Sam's club, and the Mall has Sears and other stores. Also McDonalds, Burger king, Dominos, Hard Rock Cafe and many other local restaurants. Private bilingual schools run about half the price as private schools in U.S. I would definetly look for something on the outside of town towards Cuernavaca. I haven't been to Cancun but I would live on the outside of town there too because it would be less expensive and not to close to tourists that have been partying too much.

If your company transfers you to any major city, you will find very safe neighborhoods, and excellent private bilingual shools. I am sure, if the company is transferring you that they should have assistance for families, someone to help them with the practical things like choosing a neighborhood, and how to rent a house. Find out if they do this type of thing and talk to that person. Talk to other employees who have previously been or are currently in Mexico. It would be advantageous for you to study Spanish and learn the basics, so you can be courteous to others when you meet them, and have basic skills to speak to people when you go shopping. you will have no trouble finding other Americans or Canadians in a big city. This is a great opportunity for you and i hope you really enjoy it.

If you want 100% security I don´t recomend you Mexico City. There are safer clean medium cities like León, Queretaro, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, San Luí Postosí, and all of them are well comuinicated.

If you want to live near Mexico City, and don´t want to live in Mexico City, there is Toluca and Cuernavaca.

i would say it`s better to live in the suburb of Mexico, where ecology is better and surroundings safer and use a car going to work. in some suburbs there`re Americans living and working (for ex. San Vicente Chicoloapan or Texcoco). i met Americans here in supermarkets and in the streets.

but on the other hand i think that it also worth living in the city, because there`s more life. for example Polanco or Santa Fe. good environment, a lot of police 24 hrs. i`m not sure about bilingual schools. i just know that there`re some by the embassies

I've never been to Cancun but you definatly don't want to go to Mexico City, especially with kids. it is a very dangerous n crowded city...even people from other states in mexico barely go there. in order to know how to be cuatious there and be aware of wat happens is if you grew up there...as my cousins say...the only way you'll make it through mexico city safely is if you grew up there
