You can find dirty restaurants just about anywhere, including the United States. It's possible to get sick anywhere. Some counties in the USA post the results of their Dept. of Health inspections on the web.
Here's the results of an inspection of a restaurant from NY State:
1. Toxic chemicals are improperly labeled, stored or used so that contamination of food can occur.
2. Food not protected during storage, preparation, display, transportation and service, from potential sources of contamination (e.g., food uncovered, mislabeled, stored on floor, missing or inadequate sneeze guards, food containers double stacked)
3. In use food dispensing utensils improperly stored
4. Wiping cloths dirty, not stored properly in sanitizing solutions
5. Plumbing and sinks not properly sized, installed, maintained; equipment and floors not properly drained
6. Handwashing facilities inaccessible, improperly located, dirty, in disrepair, improper fixtures, soap, and single service towels or hand drying devices missing
7. Insects, rodents present
8. Effective measures not used to control entrance (rodent-, insect-proof contruction). Harborage areas available for rodents, insects and other vermin
9. Floors, walls, ceilings, not smooth, properly constructed, in disrepair, dirty surfaces
10. Lighting and ventilation inadequate, fixtures not shielded, dirty ventilation hoods, ductwork, filters, exhaust fans
This restaurant is still open and does an excellent business. |

you think people in mexico city go around getting sick and throwing up all the time??
you can eat anywhere and not get sick, assuming you don't consider the floor a viable option. geez.... do the same thing you do in your own country!! if you see food with bugs on it, don't eat it. if the bathroom is IN the kitchen, don't eat there. if NOBODY eats there, don't eat there. |

Mexicans are sooooo proud of their food....and they do not intentionally try to make you sick. In Mexico City, there are some of the best restaurants in all of Mexico. The only thing to remember....look for people (locals). If the restaurant is packed, then it is "safe." But, really, lighten up and enjoy your trip. I'm an American living in MX....for 3 years....and I have NEVER been sick. I eat street food....and all of it is delicious. n |
