Where in Mexico is a good place for a single person on vacation? I want to spend no more than $1200 for air ?

and hotel. (I'd like to eat on that, too!)

I have spent an entire summer in Cuernavaca (2 1/2 months) for that much (included travel to Mexico City, Oaxaca, and several other excursions - by bus of course). I sublet an apartment for the summer, close to the university (ITESM). You can travel very inexpensively if you know where to stay (and you don't mind staying in modest but clean accomodations). You can go to Cancun and stay just before the Zona Hotelera. You can travel to Huatulco and stay at decent accomodations at a fraction of the cost. I recommend you check out a traveling book and plan an itinerary. That is how I have traveled on a budget and had a great time.

We arrange for students to learn Spanish in Mexico at: http://www.spanishabroad.com/study_spanish.htm

This is a great way for a single person to travel, learn about the culture, and meet people. Most of our students are single and are looking for other people to do things with. Our lowest cost program is $960 for 4 weeks in Guadalajara which includes 4 lessons per day of classes, host family accommodations, and 3 meals per day.

You can't really beat that any where else. A 3 week program is less and can put you within budget. If you wanted to spend even less time, then you would be way under budget for one or two weeks. Most of our other locations in Mexico such as Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Guanajuato, etc would put you under budget for 1 or 2 weeks even when you include airfare and spending money.

i am a texas native ,so i always go to monterrey mx,by car of course ,i usually spend in a week around 500 and that's for 41/2 persons ,so you can imagine it will be cheaper for one person.its a big city like lots to do and see.as for food if your not queasy about all the myths on mex food then you have lots of places to visit with always a good deal.some taco stands give you 5 tacos w/a coke for roughly around 3 dollars.buffet places for around 5 or 6 depending where you go.the quickest way to move around is by taxi.not like some country town where you will be bored, try it you like it

Man..for 1200 you'll have no problem going on a vacation to Mexico. I say this assuming you're going for 1-2 weeks. 2 weeks could make it tight, but you can certainly do it. Last I checked round-trip was around 350 or so from Chicago-Mexico City. I lived in Mexico (Queretaro), and I visited Acapulco and many Central Mexican cities.

For a single person? I assume you are going to want to be on the beach, right? I would go for Puerta Vallarta. It has everything to offer: great beaches, food, nightclubs, and also great day adventures like waterfalls and other wilderness type things to do. Look online and you can usually find all inclusive packages for air/hotel/food. *BEWARE: the clubs can be very expensive! Cover fees around $40 in Acapulco were normal, and while the drinks were gratis then, the bartenders wouldn't serve you unless you tipped them a lot each time.

If you want to get away from the norm, then look to some of the nicer colonial cities of Central Mexico: Queretaro, Cuernavaca(spelling)...I was there and as a white guy pulling women was easy because I was exotic to them.

Have fun, and learn some basich Spanish before you go. Don't wander around drunk by yourself at night. Stuff happens. You'll love it and not want to leave, trust me!
