What kind of work do you do? Mexico has a thing about taking a job that a Mexican can do. Have you checked out the U.S. Consulate site or better yet, IMN {Mexico Immigration site to see what they have to say. . . |

Choosing where you live in any big city will determine the safety factor. Mexico DF is no different. I was in Colonia Roma (in Df) this afternoon and felt just as safe as I would in any American big city in a nicer neighborhood. There were boy scouts and girl scouts playing by the fountain on Orizaba (the one with Michaengelo's David), people going to a play in a theatre, having dinner at a sidewalk cafe, etc. The things that you would give up going to a smaller city are variety in your daily life.
But that's just me, I'm from Chicago. You might feel different about it. I live in Toluca, just south and west of DF. It's really safe here, but boring. If you want to work here in Mexico, it would be a great idea to get a TEFL(teacher of English as a foreign language) or TESOL (teacher of English as a second language) certificate before you come. There isn't much else that you can do here for work. San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.
10% of its population are foreigners. It is a beautiful, clean and safe small city. |

there's always going to be a risk in any part of mexico city, but i think the safest would be mexico city's historic district which is downtown, or close to it. the business district is close to it. |

I live and work in Cuernavaca in the state of Morelos. It is about one hour away from Mexico City and very safe. You don't have to worry about getting taken for a ride (pun intended) by taxi drivers, there's little crime and you have all the conveniences you may need. It's a colonial town and quite pretty but there's enough going on as well. It also attracts a lot of Spanish language students so you have a quite diverse population here, but the people of Mexico are wonderfully warm so nothing to worry about.
There's a community for expats in Cuernavaca that you may consider joining if you come here, or contact them for more information:

I would take a spanish class to be more educated in the language, and from there
maybe consider moving to a safer city if
you feel Mexico City is unsafe, I like it there
but I didn't work there and live, I lived and
worked in Cancun for 2 years and it was very
safe.......
