Mexico is a spectacular country with immense variation between all the myriad possibilities. Where to go depends ENTIRELY on what kinds of things you like to do, whether or not you can speak any Spanish, how comfortable you are with foriegn travel and new experiences.

In my own opinion, I'd recommend the following for different kinds of travelers.

If you love THE BEACH, visit Cancun first, Playa del Carmen 2nd, other Riviera Maya beaches 3rd.

If you want to SNORKEL or SCUBA DIVE, visit Cozumel first, Cancun 2nd.

If you want a SCENIC PACIFIC COAST BEACH, visit Puerto Vallarta first, then Manzanillo, Acapulco, or even Los Cabos.

If you want to experience MAYAN RUINS, visit Chichen-Itza first, Uxmal 2nd, Palenque 3rd.

If you want to experience OTHER ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS, visit Teotihuacan first, El Tajin 2nd, Oaxaca 3rd.

If you want to experience WORLD CLASS ART, visit Mexico City first, second, and third, and then maybe think about Guadalajara or Oaxaca.

If you want to TASTE STUNNING MEXICAN CUISINE, visit Oaxaca first, Puebla 2nd, Mexico City 3rd.

If you want NIGHTLIFE THAT ROCKS, visit Mexico City, Acapulco, and Monterrey, in that order, then anything else.

I am from Mexico. To be exact from Guadalajara. In that same state there's a beach and place named Puerto Vallarta. It's pretty nice. Cancun, Mexico is like another Miami and people also say that Acapulco is nice too.

I DON'T KNOW HOW OLD YOU ARE BUT IF YOUR IN YOUR 20'S AND 30'S AND SINGLE YOU MAY WANT TO GO TO CANCUN OR PUERTO VALLARTA. MY HUSBAND AND I WILL BE 60 YEARS OLD AND WE LOVE IXTAPA/ZIHUATANEJO WE HAVE BEEN GOING THERE FOR OVER 20 YEARS. IXTAPA IS A VERY SMALL SCALE OF CANCUN AND ZIHUA IS A LITTLE BIT OF THE OLD. I WOULD RETIRE DOWN THERE BUT MY HUSBAND IS ANOTHER THING. MARRIED FOR 40 YEARS.

Puerto Vallarta has a very beautiful wildlife and beach! My uncle's are the owners of the Vallarta Zoo and here is the link for that: http://zoologicodevallarta.com/ also it has alot of mountains and vegetation especially in the Canopy area. you can just google that and see the beautiful greenery. Good Luck!!!

You are right, all of Mexico's best are spread out around the country.
I am busing Mexico and I used http://soletravelmexico.com/travel-mexico.html to plan out my route. It worked well because it lists bus routes, times, and cost, and hostel/pousada listings and prices.

I recommend visiting the pacific side if you want to surf... the Barra de Navidad area is nice, and there are a lot of different beaches in the area.

The Caribbean side is very nice too. Warm, clear blue water... what could be better! Although Cancun is nice it is expensive, so try other Riveria locations. I like Tulum - you can see Mayan ruins right on the beach. Also remember that if you want a little escape withing your vacation, take a short bus or ferry ride. Everything on the Caribbean side is pretty close to each other.

Good luck... and have fun!

TOTALLY depends on what you are looking for. International luxury-hotel beach scene? Mayan ruins? Mexican culture? Traditional Mexican experience? Rustic / eco- tourism? SOOOO many choices, you should figure out what you are looking for and re-post, or add details.
