That's a good time to go, well, except for the heat. The kids are back in school or getting ready to go back. The resort towns are all very similar, so just shop for the best package. The ones I would shy away from are Acapulco and Puerta Vallarta. Dirty, loud, and over priced. I guess my favorite would be Cabo San Lucas on the Baja Peninsula. It's where two oceans meet. Go to the web site and have a look. |

I love mexico but wouldn't suggest cancun...its a big party town. Try looking into some of the all inclusive resorts...sandals is a good one, not sure if they have anything in mexico. Cozumel is my favorite place to go. |

Do you want to go to the beach? Puerto Vallarta is a nice place, Huatulco and Manzanillo are also good options they are small towns, not so crowded.
You should also consider places like Morelia, Guanajuato or Puebla. They are touristic towns where you can taste delicious food and look for handicrafts. Near to Morelia there are some nice small towns, not so busy |

I would recommend Mayan Riviera area, Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas. With Puerto Vallarta there are 3 areas you could stay in.
With the Mayan Riviera area this area span is quite large and many resorts to choose from. It is also on the Caribbean side so you will have those white sand beaches and the beautiful aqua waters. In Puerto Vallarta & Cabo being on the Pacific side the water will be darker, rougher and brown sand beaches.
There are so many possibilities for you. I would highly suggest contacting an experienced travel professional. A good one can ask a series of questions to help determine which destination, resort, etc. they feel is best for you. All while trying to stay within your budget & travel dates. So many of these hotels/resorts are different from one another it is just impossible for me to just list a few without knowing more information. What your neighbor likes, you may not.
Many agents will charge a nominal service fee of $10 – 20 per person. Others maybe more, I can only say for ours. It is nice though to have a direct contact to help you with any questions, concerns, etc. Also in the event of issues you have someone in your corner. I had a girl come in last summer who said she booked her Cancun trip online for Jan 2006 staying at the Marriott. She literally got down there and this property wasn’t even open. To this day, she is still fighting with Orbitz to get money back. I have had others go to the airport and have no tickets. Either way if we make a mistake you have recourse where as to online you have none. Plus some of these hotel sites have “high” ratings when they don’t deserve them because no one regulates them. It’s nice to work with an honest agent because a smart agent doesn’t want there clients to go down and hate there trip, just for the sake of making the booking process easier by say a client requesting a certain place that the agents knows to not be a good property, which SOME do unfortunately. Like any business there are the good, the bad and the down right ugly when it comes to finding an agent. So if you find a good one, I would definitely stay with them if they are both knowledgeable and personalities click. Hey travel is expensive, when you are spending this kind of money you want to also get along with the person!
Please make sure that you are up to date on your passport. I know they have that flexibility until Sept. 30th 2007 on travel to Mexico, Caribbean & Canada, but only if you are able to see your application in process on travel.state.gov and print out a receipt. I had one client from yesterday tell me they applied 1 1/2 months ago and still they aren't listed on this site under tracking. There will be no exceptions other than this receipt.
Mexico is wonderful though, great choice! I wish you all the best of luck with your travels and please let me know if I can further assist you. |

I've heard Cancuun is pretty amazing, but I've never been there myself so I don't know if there are a lot of college kids or not. |

Try Morelos -- Cuernavaca is the "City of Eternal Spring" the weather is great, the city is not too big and it is close to Mex City, archeological ruins, Taxco and other "resort" towns. Morelos is in the central mountainous region of Mexico; however, there are several natural lagoons and hot springs that are beatiful. You can avoid the humidity and crowding of coastal cities and enjoy the real Mexico. |

I would recommend the riviera maya. I would stay at a resort called Occidental grand Xcaret. It is a resort built more around the couple scene. It is set in the middle of the rain forest, yet it is alos right on the coast by the blue water. You will see natural wildlife on the resort and the most breathtaking views you might ever see. You are in the middle of the yucatan peninsula, which puts you closer to all the sights that you and your husband may want to see.
I recommend some of the tours that the resort will offer you during your stay there, one of the best being Chizinitza. It is one of the seven wonders of the world, and is very unique. Also Tulum and Xel-ha are very interesting sites to see. I would name so many more, but you can look and see for yourself what you would like.
Xcaret is located just south of Playa Del Carmen, about ten minutes. Right next to the resort is the ecological park of Xcaret. This is a must see, and is free for one day with your stay at the resort. The dinner show at night is awesome.
On the resort there is everything you could think of. I recommend that you paint your own pottery on the resort by the swim up bar or by the beach. The resturants are good, and there is more than enough bars to keep your buzz going.
The nightly show on the resort is pretty good too. The entertainment that they provide is done on a two week basis. This means that unless you stay for longer than two weeks, you will never see the same show twice.
This is an all inclusive resort, and the people at the resort will wait on you hand and foot. They make sure to take care of you and if you show them a little appreciation, with a small one or two dollar tip, they will keep you with a full drink during your whole stay.
I hope this helps with your search. I do know that the eastern side of Mexico is much better than the western side. I would choose the blue of the water and the people from the east over the west any time. The temp and climate are verturally the same. It is all up to you and your specific prefernces. Hope this was helpful. |

if you want something a bit quieter than cancun (meaning, less kids&college kids),I would have to say Progreso, Yucatan. It has the longest pier in, i believe, north america. it is mostly mexican culture. but there are many expats, especially between september/october and easter. it is on the gulf coast. it is 30 minutes from the capital of yucatan, merida. it's a major cruise port, so there are more shops open and crafts a couple days a week...it's the place for people from merida vacation in the summer, so there are many places to rent during the rest of the year (and depending how long you are staying, may be cheaper than a hotel). There are quite a few people from Canada, Europe, and the States. The locals are friendly and try to help. |

Go to Cozumel or the Mayan Riveria. I would check out how far it is from the airport of you do the Mayan Riveria. I personally love Cozumel. Check Apple vacations and worry free vacations. If you live near St. Louis go to Manzanilla(I don't know if I spelled that right). It looks awesome and St. Louis is the only place we could find a flight out to get there.
If you go to Cozumel check out Sabor. It is brand new and it is adult only. That doesn't mean there are a lot of naked people or anything. Just no kids. There aren't many kids at any of the resorts anyway(I usually take mine though). It has swim up rooms and looks awesome. It is right next to the Ref Club which I have been to twice now. I love it!! The Ref Club also shows to be recently remodled so I would love to go back there too. If you don't mind paying extra for Sabor it may be worth it because you get to take advantage of both resorts. I understand that if you stay at the Ref Club you have to pay $20 to eat at Sabor. Either way I think you will love it. You can snorkel right in front of your hotel and we have seen lots of different fish there.
Don't go to Mexico for the food or you will be dissapointed. I do think that the food at the Ref Club is better then the other places I have been in Cozumel. I do always sneak to town and have a burger at Hard Rocks.
Also my husband and I rented a jeep. I think you can get one for $60. I recommend that over a tour. You can go to town, the ruins and explore everything at your own pace. We had a blast.
Also bring bug spray if you are going in August. You will need it. Keep an eye out and if they start spraying the jungle put on the bug spray. Most of the time the bugs aren't bad, but if they spray some times it will cause them to flock to a certain area to try and get away. |

PV is a little touristy. San Miguel is beautiful in every way but too many ex-pats. Guanajuato is great, non touristy, a university town so some young people, To eliminate all the above and an excellent place for old folks(I am 70+) I highly recommend Jalapa, Veracruz. |

Cancun is not a good choice. Too many punk kids there. I would recommend Puerto Vallarta. Its a very safe city and if you want to experience the "real" Mexico then stay in the downtown area "El Centro" or Old Town (Zona Romantica). To the north of downtown is the touristy all-inclusives that some people like (for reasons I don't understand). Welcome to my hometown! |
