Where should I stay in Puerto vallarta? |
I am looking for a place to stay (hotel) in PV that is inexpensive but also not far away from all the touristy spots. Also should I convert my US dollars in to pesos once I arrive? |

Since it is low tourist season right now, you will not find it difficult to find an inexpensive place to stay. Try the Holiday Inn, which is right on the beach in the bay, as well as the Krystal. When we were leaving (just a few weeks ago), it was starting to be very dead in the hotel and one family told me that they got a very good deal because of the time of year it is.
That being said, it is right in the heart of all the touristy spots that you want to be close to. It's about 20 minutes from the Malecon/ downtown, 45 minutes away from Sayulita (very small town that has great surfing, instructors and nice little bars/restaurants) and about 10 minutes away from the airport.
You can basically get to most attractions for about 50 pesos or $5.00 U.S. but if you're up for a wildride, take the bus. I know you didn't ask about transportation, but I'm just trying to give you a general idea about where the hotels are located in relation to fun things.
I recommend you convert your U.S. currency, as pesos are very easy to use. Also, since the conversion rate is:
1 U.S. dollar = 10.3922017 Mexican pesos,
you will get more value out of your money if you convert it. Everyone just rounds up there, so if something is 100 pesos, they just charge you $10.00 U.S. dollars. Can you see how there would be a little bit of a loss in your dollar without using pesos?
Either currency is fine and very much appreciated though (as are tips), I learned that people who work in the resorts as maids, bartenders, etc. make about $5.00 a DAY and have to depend on tips. Try to tip as you would back home :)
Try the site "Trip Advisor" which has a lot of hotels and user reviews as well as photos and videos for you to basically see where you're going, what people thought of it, and exciting things to do. Here is the Holiday Inn on the site, just as an example. Average cost per night: $147 but it is cheaper if you do an all-inclusive for the week.

*I just read someone who didn't have a very good trip. As I say, I stayed in the Holiday Inn and had an AMAZING time! The people who sell time shares aren't allowed to come into the resort, so you don't have to worry about that. Also, a simple, "No, senor, gracias" is fine to say if you're not interested in hearing about time shares, or buying silver on the beach. The people may be poor and looking for business, but they aren't jerks and they aren't stalkers. |

The Posada Roger is nice. A list of some other budget hotels are found here: http://vallartainfo.com/hotels.html
There are also hotels that cost a little more like the Eloisa ( 1/2 block from the beach). Puerto Vallarta is a wonderful and fun place. You do have to avoid talking to time-share salesmen at the airport and downtown, just ignore them, or say you own a condo, or you are on a cruise ship, leaving that day.
The best thing to do is take a debit card (check bank to see if they charge for using it in Mexico), with only the money you want to spend in Mexico. There are ATM's at the airport, and everywhere in town. If you bring US dollars, convert them at a bank (long lines) or at any cambrio (money exchangers, also found everywhere in town). Hotels, restaurants, stores, and anyone else charges you a lot, since they have to go stand in line at a bank to change back to pesos. |

I keep the dollars you have as dollars in a safe place (money belt, bra, shoe) and get pesos from the ATM at the airport.
For a good inexpensive hotel, check out the Posada Roger.

I have stayed at the Tropicana 2 times. It is a basic but nice beach front hotel.

Take enough USD to survive until you can go to a bank ATM in town.
Look for the Interac symbol to avoid paying extra charges for exchange.
The bank ATM will give you the best rate. Your funds will come out in pesos. 1 USD = 10.70 pesos. You need to ask for withdrawl in pesos.
If you want approx. 200 dollars ask for 2200 pesos. There is usually a 3000-4000 peso daily maximum. |

Look into staying at Canto Del Sol. It is really nice and they have great nightly entertainment. Exchange some of your US dollars but most places will accept US as payment so don't worry too much about it. Also, remember to bring lots of small bills so you can tip!! Have fun! |

If you are going to Puerto Vallarta on vacation I would change your plans. We just got back from Puerto Vallarta and hated it. The beaches and ocean was so nasty we wouldn't even go in the ocean. If you go in the touristy spots you are constantly stopped be people trying to sell you a timeshare. I would hate for you to be as disappointed as we were. If you must go to Mexico I would go to the caribbean side like cancun. |
