Both are very good destinations!! Costa Rica is awesome for it's eco tourism, zip lines etc, Cancun is awesome for it's party atmosphere, or head down to Playa del Carmen for a quieter time.

Well, Cancun if you want to party, Costa Rica if you want to get away from it all and relax... and do little or nothing at all.
Costa Rica also will not be as hot, although August is the middle of rainy season.
