Who's been to Six Flags Mexico or La Feria at Parque Chapultepec? |
So, during our upcoming trip to Mexico, the kids want to go to an amusement park. Obviously, by reputation alone, they want to go to Six Flags. I'm wondering how La Feria at El Parque Chapultepec stacks up. Is it even close?
I've read there are roller coasters and other rides - and the rest of the park (zoo, museums, historical sites), seems more worth it in the limited time we have, to me at least. Alas, it's not soley my choice :(
So, let's hear your experiences/opinions on either Six Flags Mexico or Parque Chapultepec's amusement park - or both!
Thanks in advance. |

La Feria de Chapultepec only has 2 roller coasters, a big wooden one that's old but in good condition and one of those rides where you are upside down that's scary as hell, but there's no line for it so you could ride it 50 times in 2 hours if you're nutty enough.
The Feria is very cheap (only 5 dollars per person for most of the rides) and has a lot of kid rides, but it's what I'd say, what you pay for. The installations are kind of old which will seem in American culturally standards and there's a lot of naco people. I'm not joking when I was waiting on line once and there was an obese woman with a tank top revealing 1 foot long armpit hair oozing with sweat. *shudders*
If time is an issue, you could use half of a day for the Feria (the best rides can be done in 3 hours if you get there early) and then move on to the Papalote museum which kids like and perhaps to the Chapultepec zoo or Turibus or something of the sort.
Six Flags is a nice park (very large) with a lot of rides, but it's expensive (people aren't joking when they say the regular fee is almost 60 US dollars which is insanely expensive for an average mexican). Add another 20 dollars for food per person and you can see what I meant about Six Flags being expensive. There's a lot of people from schools everyday so unless you're there at the opening hour at 11 am, you'll easily lose a day waiting in lines. There's ess kiddy rides than in the Feria.
The other downside of Six Flags is that it's located so down south that it's far away from the tourist traps and not accesible by subway. Unless you plan ahead on losing that day, maybe you should tell your kids they'll get a much broader experience of the world eating breakfast in a street stand on a Saturday tianguis market eating unmentionable body parts from a pig (but dammit, pig intestines sure are tasty!!!) than standing on line to get on a roller coaster which probably can't compare with the amusement parks in the US.
I'd rather take them to see the Teotihuacan pyramids which is a fun place for a kid to get worn out and eat dinner in the awesome restaurants near the pyramids (there is a great restaurant nearby that's inside of a cave, really cool and great food). I first went to Teotihuacan as an impressionable kid and had a great time, it's something they won't forget. Believe me, they will run out of batteries running up the Sun pyramid. If you do go there, bring a lot of sun screen and cameras because the view is awesome up there!
I've also heard good remarks of the Ciudad de los Niños, might be a fun thing to do (sadly Santa Fe isn't even remotely near downtown, maybe if you want to show your kids what the lifestyle of mexican millionaires is like it might not be a bad idea to go there; as in they should foret everything they heard of mexicans living in little huts and have no electricity. Santa Fe and Las Lomas makes Beverly Hills look shabby in my opinion)... |

I've lived in Mexico City for almost 28 years and have been to both Six Flags and La Feria. Six Flags is a guarantee, rides and shows are super professional, make sure to ask for any specials (eg. can of Pepsi, etc.), try their website. La Feria is more carnival-like, really not worth it, the only plus is that it has the "Papalote" Children's museum next door, which is a lot of fun, especially for elementary age children. Six Flags is in south Mexico City, and be aware that crossing the city can sometimes mean a 2 hr. ride given the traffic conditions. The Zoo is fun, Museo de Antropologia is a must, and the Polanco area that is close to Chapultepec has the city's best boutiques and restaurants.
Depending on the age of your children, you might also want to try instead of Feria de Chapultepec, "La Ciudad de los Niños" in Centro Comercial Santa Fe. It's about a 30-40min. drive from Polanco (Chapultepec area), its indoors (it ALWAYS rains in Mexico around this time of the year) and it's basically a mini-city built for kids.

Everything is at the child's level, every booth is about something different, usually sponsored, like a fire station, police station, beauty parlor, sushi restaurant...everything is hands-on, so they get to dress up at the fire station, learn to make sushi, "shop" at the grocery store, it is SO much fun!

i went to six flags mexico when i was 14. the rides are not as good as Six Flags Magic Mountain, but they're ok, by Mexican standards.
i left early tho because it was raining so hard.
if ur going to six flags mexico, dont go in july, august, or sep.
it rains to hard, it hurts. no joke.
but i would have thought the ticket price for six flags in mexico would of been cheaper than in the US, but it's actually the same price, $560.00 Mexican Pesos. |

HI, i have been in both, Six Flags have everything the others Six Flags have, it´s nice, lot of restaurans and food to choose; it has BATMAN BEGINS SHOW, and a LIGHNTING PARADE; BUT if you go in this month, well, with GUSTAV, IKE and other hurricanes, it´s gonna rain for sure and when that happens the PARADE is canceled. Talking about La Feria, well, when you go there, it has its Zoo, the Palacio de Chapultepec, where Maximiliano lived (you can enter and see how the rich and famous lived back then), the amusement park and very close it´s the PAPALOTE Museo del niño (Kids Musem), very funny.
Have a nice trip!

Six flags is better and the closest to what you are used to in the USA, and its larger.
La Feria is a smaller park the rides are kind of old, but you have close-by the Zoo and Papalote Museum, which is a museum only for kids, adults can get in only with kids.
Visit both if you can kids will like it. |

It is definitely worth it.
The thing about Mexico City is that it is a world of it's own. What I mean is that it has everything and anything, people are different there. Life is faster.
If you could compare it, Mexico City is our own version of your New York... Not saying they are identical, but they are similar.
I've been to both parks and I had fun, it was great and I enjoyed it a lot. Just keep your eyes peeled.
Have fun! |
