Mexico won the battle, but the battle was costly for Santa Ana (spelling not sure) and may have cost him the war
1) The battle took much longer than he anticipated letting the Texan Army grow and train. Most important reason The Alamo was so important.
2) There were also more casualties than one would expect from the Mexicans in this battle, thus weakening them before his defeat.
The Texans lost the battle in The Alamo, but because of that battle they won the war. |

The Mexicans won the battle, but Texas ultimately won its independence from Mexico. Shortly afterwards, Texas asked the United States to annex them (make them a part of the US), because they were worried that the Mexicans would come back and conqer Texas again. |

The Mexicans won this battle big time. Over 200 defenders were killed in the battle of the Alamo. On February 23, 1836, the arrival of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army outside San Antonio nearly caught them by surprise. Undaunted, the Texians and Tejanos prepared to defend the Alamo together. The defenders held out for 13 days against Santa Anna's army. William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo sent forth couriers carrying pleas for help to communities in Texas. On the eighth day of the siege, a band of 32 volunteers from Gonzales arrived, bringing the number of defenders to nearly two hundred. Legend holds that with the possibility of additional help fading, Colonel Travis drew a line on the ground and asked any man willing to stay and fight to step over — all except one did. As the defenders saw it, the Alamo was the key to the defense of Texas, and they were ready to give their lives rather than surrender their position to General Santa Anna.
The significance of the battle was that Santa Anna foolishly divided his army to conquer 3 more "hotspots" of Texas Rebellion. The Battle of the Alamo gave the force under the direction of Sam Houston at San Jacinto time to prepare and fortify. The Battle of San Jacinto won independence for Texas. The Battle of the Alamo was about making Santa Anna wait as long as possible, unfortunately everyone who took Colonel Travis' challenge and stepped across the line was killed. |
