Why are moustaches so popular in Mexico??

I just got back from Mexico & the majority of men there wear a moustache.Don't get me wrong,I think Moustaches are hot & look good.Maybe I should ask why don't American men usually wear moustaches?? Porque??

The reason I can think is the same as Juan Ramon, view of masculinity. also for masculine beauty. my relatives always tell me why i don't grow a mustache or any facial hair, sI'mply b/c i shave and im not really into having facial hair.

I'm from Mexico, and to be honest I don't know for sure.

They are probably popular since they are quite often associated with the traditional Mexican view of masculinity. If you think of it, many popular icons in Mexican culture used moustaches: Historical figures, such as Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata and Lázaro Cárdenas; actors and singers such as Pedro Infante, Pepe Aguilar, José Alfredo Jimenez and Vicente Fernández.

Well the Spanish oppressed Mexicans for centuries. Anything Indian was considered inferior therefore growing a mustache was a status symbol because it was a sign that you were not of full Indian blood (Indians cant grow full mustaches). It is also tradition and a sign of masculinity to a certain extent but they're becoming less and less common these days.

In America, when our ancestors came in from Europe, many of the men did have mustaches. Look at old immigrant pictures of Italian-Americans and Russians and even the people who went out west. But as time went by we abandoned our original cultures to conform to American business practices. The drive for success probably caused us to abandon it.

I always wondered about the hair gel myself.............Culture is the only logical answer

It's not just Mexico! I was just in Pakistan and half the men there have Mustaches, and if not Mustaches, beards!

Are they?

I'm mexican, living and answering from México, and I think that is not true. You must be talking about Pancho Villa or Emiliano Zapata!, those died in early last century!.

Today, some men wear moustache, but I don't think the "most". I don't do it, neither my dad nor three of my brothers; one of my brothers is wearing it today.
