Cities in Mexico do not have the water purification facilities that U.S. cities have. Also many of the water pipes in Mexico are extremely old, contain lead, and let in impurities. Resorts and restaurants (especialy in tourist areas.) always use bottled water to make ice and to serve their customers. If in doubt, ask. Otherwise just use bottled water. It is easily available everywhere.

Contains bacteria that our bodies are not used to. Makes US citizens sick.

It depends on the person and where you go. I drink it all the time, but then again I think my body is used to it.

As Charlie mentioned, most places in Mexico don't have water purification and the water carries bacteria that upsets stomachs that aren't used to it. It's like drinking milk straight out of the cow, it's drinkable, but not without you getting sick first.

City codes in Mexico aren't required to have purified water either, as they do here in the US. I'm sure if you drink it for a long time, your body becomes immune to it to where it won't make you sick, but because you're not there for a long time, it's not worth doing it. You will be one sick puppy with diarrhea to say the least, but stomach problems for days that will keep you from coming back.

Even people in Mexico drink purified water now-a-days (use the 5-Gallon tanks).

Mexico and many third world and/or less developed countries have water that has bacteria that would cause us upset stomachs. It is always safer to drink bottled water and even to rinse your mouth with bottled water. The Health Nurse would advise you (before you go, you should get the necessary shots and speak to a Health Nurse) to drink only bottled water, or canned drinks (soda pop) because the carbonation also helps to stop bacteria and she would advise you not to eat anything that 's not cooked or raw. There is a saying to go by and remember "cook it, boil it, peel it or throw it out!" Even in some of these countries, when you buy bottled water, check the seal on the cap of the bottle.
Some vendors would fill used bottles with their own water and re-sell it (recycled!) Don't drink anything that has ice in it because you don't know what water was used to make the ice. The drinks can be chilled in the refrigerator if you want it cold.
This is serious. No cut fruits because you don't know what water was used to wash the fruits. I was in Peru 2 yrs ago. I was constipated because many meals had no cooked vegetables that came with them. I could not eat the salads and I did eat like fruit cocktail that I knew was from canned fruit. But that was not enough fiber and even when I took "fiber choice". So one morning, I took freshly-cut papayas! I love papayas and miss eating them. They sell them at supermarkets here but they are expensive. So, I took a small dish of it at breakfast and boy! did I regret that! I had diarrhea all day that day. I took Pepto Bismol and then, even took Imodium . Nothing worked! Finally I took an antibiotic that my doctor in the States had prescribed called Ciprofloxin. One dose and it stopped. Be sure to take with you doses of Ciprofloxin. Get your doctor to prescribe, just in case you need it. If you don't need it, maybe someone else does and you can help. You can buy the generic form, from Walmart at around $4. Wishing you all the best and a safe trip!
