Well, it's the same as if someone call you Canadian, British, Australian...
Some could get mad about this confusion, some others will just laugh.

Probably because you're assuming something about him. Wouldn't you get upset if someone just lumped you together with everyone else. That is basically what you're doing. You're saying Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican are all interchangeable.

They aren't the same thing. They each have their own heritage and country.

And maybe they get so upset because of how often it happens. I would get tired of it as well.

It is because we are VERY proud to be Mexicans.
We have HUGE Aztec, Mayan and Olmeca's cultures behind us.
Which is just a "pretty small" detail Puerto Rican's donÂ´t have, PLUS we have to remember that WE KNOW that Puerto Rican's ARE an American colony and we are an INDEPENDENT country. A "pretty small" difference", I mean, even a chimp knows the difference.

Maybe you are talking about Mexicans who live in the US, because they are not in Mexico and they are very proud of our country.

But Mexicans like me who lives in Mexico dont have problems with that.

not all of those people are the same
just because you speak the same language

Some people are like that. You learn who they are and make certain you don't push that hot button with them. If it were me, I'd just ignore the guy - he's a bit of a twit. Who needs his hassle?

well i was born here in california but iam mexican and i would not flip out if someone confused me for a puertorican, i would just tell them i was mexican and thats it. but maybe because jose grew up in mexico he dosnt realiyse that here in USA there is a lot of latinos, and most americans cant tell the difference between them. just like most of us cant tell the diff from a chinese and a korean ext....

Mikey's observations have found that Mexicans are extremely proud of their heritage.
I didn't like using " mexican " sounded derogatory to me. They have no problem with that.
Now I did experience this - When I might use America in a sentence they seemed to include themselves. They don't seem to distinguish the term America like we do. They see the term as including central America as well and associate themselves that way.
If you wanted to make a distinction in your sentence then use " USA " and then they took themselves out of that sentence.
Weird but I asked a friend here and was told that was the explanation.

If you live in the states with a large population of Latinos you will notice that they also display their home state on their cars or whatever - along the same "pride" lines as we are talking about.

Hmmm... While at a summer program back in high school, I was speaking to a friend from New Jersey about God-knows-what, when a bunch of students from Spain joined our discussion. At a natural pause in the conversation, she said something along the lines of "wow, I'm the only person here who isn't Spanish." Everyone but Jersey is now staring at me, half laughing. "I'm Mexican, honey," I respond. "Oh, same thing," she said.

Yes, I was pissed off. No, it is not the same thing.

Consider the context in which your friends are being called Puerto Rican.

Hispanics tend to be like this, as every Latino thinks that they're the best.

Puerto Rican and Venezuelans think they're the hottest cause they've won 5 Miss Universes.

Cubans are mostly of Spanish decent so they feel superior.

and Mexicans are always at war with the U.S.
