Well there is an explanation for it also.
Spanish has roots in several dead languages,( just like English); has most of its roots from Latin, some greek, some arab, and even some old German and Gaelic.
Alto from latin Altius means Tall as they been telling you.
Alto from germanic roots comes from Halt and means Stop.
and if you dig more into it you will find that a lot of words in spanish comes from the same roots than the same meaning in english.
Like war in English and guerra in Spanish both comes from the Germanic warrat. |

Alto is a formal way of commanding "stop" in Spanish. Yes, it also means tall or high, but just as there are in the English language, there are many homonyms in the Spanish language. |

If you see a sign in Mexico that says Alto, it means stop. At an intersection you will notice that not everybody stops, just be careful. |

Alto comes from the verb "hacer alto" , to make a stop. It is not used any other way in Spanish except for stop signs that I know of. Therefore, the word alto has come to mean stop in Spanish. |

some good answers above and word roots are a part of it yet
sometimes languages just develop terms through everyday use that catch on and that in actuality do not make sense but are accepted because of common use.
why do we in the USA drive on a "parkway" and why do most "freeways" usually cost money to use.
there are examples of this in every language |
