Why is Mexico so dirty and dusty?

It is the wealthiest country in Latin America, with a great location (next to the world's economic powerhouse).

Why is the place so dusty and dirty and unkempt?

Of course Cancun and the tourist areas are nice, but the normal areas are crummy. The roads have potholes and speed bumps. A lot of the houses are half built and not even painted.

People sweep dust and dirt outside of their homes and businesses. Why don't they just get street sweepers?

I'd like to hear from some Mexicans on this one.

One reason that many Mexican towns stay dusty is the rainy season from May to October. The usual scenario is that it rains every afternoon from about 5pm to about 6pm and washes some mud out of the hills. The next day, the dirt dries in the cobblestone streets; then as cars run over it, it lifts the dry dirt into the air and it slowly settles back down on cars, in homes and in stores.

One reason that many homes are unfinished is that property taxes are less on an unfinished home than they are on a completed home. So they leave a little piece unfinished to save money. The gringos who retire to Mexico live in completed homes and are happy to pay the full property tax which is only about one-tenth of what they were paying in the states. But the town doesn't bring in enough revenue to buy a street sweeping machine.

you're an idiot

HAZ PATRIA, MATA A UN GRING0
it's not dirty here, the dust is from the environment. places like Alta California, Arizona, Nuevo México, etc. are the same, it's just gringos will waste water putting grass in the middle of a desert.

why does it rain so much in florida?

you miss the point of México, here, we put the money where it is important. many of those places you describe are built with bricks and well over 100 years old, and while they don't look new from the outside, inside there are no problems.

it is a different culture/philosophy.

the toll roads are in excellent condition, and our government is rebuilding the entire nationwide highway system. it should be completed in 2011 or so.

the nice parts of México are off limits to the general public, private roads, etc. people want their privacy, not to show the world how much money they have. here in D.F., Las Lomas makes so-called "wealthy" neighborhoods in the jewsa look like slums.

remember, we have more billionaires here than Switzerland. if you only spend a couple days here on vacation you have no idea what's going on.

WHY IS THE US. very racist?
why does so many countrys dont like the USa???

OMG.... okay first off, this is not "all" of Mexico. There are places like that ANYWHERE the climate is hot.

Furthermore, what do you mean by the "wealthiest" country? As in the greatest GDP? I'm pretty sure Brazil takes this prize, with Mexico a close second. Either way, having a high GDP is not the same as having high living standards or the same as the PEOPLE having the money. Mexico has a very big division between rich and poor. The vast majority have hardly nothing compared to the rich few.

Besides, have you even been to places like Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, etc? Do you know nothing?

And what do you mean by the "normal" areas? What is YOUR idea of what is NORMAL for a country that is NOT yours? How would you even know what is normal?

"Why don't they just get street sweepers?" HOW BOUT YOU PAY FOR IT THEN!

It never ceases to amaze me how ridiculous people are... OBVIOUSLY in the areas that actually are like this, there is a lack of funds for your first world industrialized rich tastes. It's not like they prefer poverty.

What reality are you living in?

Street sweepers just raise a lot of dust!

I go to Mazatlan in the winter and the streets and sidewalks area a lot cleaner than they are in my Canadian home town. It is because the business owners and home owners take pride and clean (water and sweep) their store fronts and front driveways. I work in town centre back home and have to sidestep vomit, hundreds of cigarette butts, Tim Horton coffee cups and other debris.

I agree with everyone else, your a friggin fool.
Have you ever been to a big city in the USA they are disgustingly dirty, bums pee and crap in the alleys, garbage and food all over the streets, if this is your idea of clean stay in your shitty dream world.

Melanie L
Very poor government organization.

The minumum wage is low and no one pays taxes (no one can afford to pay taxes) what is 15% of nothing??

Why do they pay their police officers an equivalent of 80 cents per hour? Is it any wonder the police detain and rob the citizens.

Why are the houses half built, because their employment ends before they can finish them and things like food on the table becomes a priority.

Places like Cancun are well kept because the wealthy owners of the hotels can afford to pay their 15% tax, for causes like maintaining roads why not, when the waiters and housekeeping staff are being paid $10 per day.
