Not true. When traveling to a large city in Mexico, one needs to take the same precautions as you would in any large city in the USA (or any other country, for that matter). I felt very safe in Mexico City. There were police officers everywhere in the Zona Rosa, and the hotels had security officers. Just be aware of your surroundings.

The tap water is not safe to drink, but after you've spent some time there, you get used to brushing your teeth with bottled water and ordering agua purificada at restaurants.

Many areas are in the mountains, and the thin air takes some time to adjust to. If you take it easy for a couple of days, you'll be fine. If you live in Denver, then you'll already be used to living at high altitude, and it will be easier for you.

Knowing the language of the country you are visiting will help immensely also. Many people in the USA with the "speak English" mentality are lazy and don't want to be bothered to learn another language. The reality is that if you learn another language, people in the target country respect you more and it opens job opportunities in your own country.

I spent some time in a border city in France. A shopkeeper there spoke French, English, and German. She knew all of her "regulars" (and their native languages) and there was mutual respect between her, her German customers, her French customers, and her English and American customers. She has a thriving business!

It is not all that bad in Mexico. Most of what you hear about in the news, kidnappings and such, happen to Mexicans who tend to be well off.

I dont think its dangerous because it's Mexico, I think its dangerous becuase it's another country. We have better laws and law enfourcment here. It's harder to get away wiht hate crims and murders are investigate more here. If someone killed you in Mexico iI think theres a possibility you could be SOL.

And yes, the water too.

?
Overall, we are a safer country than Mexico so it's safer for everyone to be here and not as safe for everyone to be over there, regardless of who you are.

I've been to Mexico several times and have always had a good time. I tend to stick around tourist areas though. It's much safer that way.
