it is apparently dangerous but only if you are in the drug buisness. I must say media really exaggerates, I've been living in Mexico for long, travelling everywhere by bus, car, plane, etc. and nothing has ever happened to me. Do not beleive everything media says! Drug cartels don't ever mess with civilians and even less with the tourists.

mexico is not dangerous only drug related people being killed how many US citizens-tourists have you heard of being killed? NONE. how many people in the united states are killed yearly by gangs, criminals, etc. way more than the 7 thousand killed in mexico last year.

It's dangerous cause of the Cartels, but they are not in all mexico, mostly the borders and some states like Sonora, Baja California. Most of the country is safe, i am living in Jalisco, Mexico, and everything is fine here so far, so it really depends on where part you go at.
good luck

Andy
Because the government has finally decided to do something about the drug cartels and they have been having civil wars between each other, police and drug cartels

im mexican i admit that my country is pretty fcked up right now.........we have drug cartels fighting against the cops/millitary.... since the cops are corrupt we have no local protection....just a few days ago my uncle got attacked by ten potheads/crackheads.....so the millitary has to step in so it's a WAR between drug cartels and the mexican military......mexican millitary has the disadvantage cuz the US is supllying them unknowningly with big guns......if i were u i wouldn't go there cuz youll either get assaulted, kidnappe, killed etc....

Well, there is like some gang in Mexico and they have been killing police officers, army people, firefighters, doctors, etc. so more violence.
My cousin was a police officer and was a victim of this "gang"
the killing is mostly in Baja California

I agree with Charlie. Basically the problem is because the government is trying to capture all of the drug cartels, and that's why all the violence is coming. (police, army, drug dealers, gangs). And its not every day that you see those events (its not even one in a month) sometimes you don't even know until you see in the media the news.

If you want to visit Cancun, Acapulco, Los Cabos, or any other tourist area then you will have no problem.

.*NeLly*.
so many different drug cartels fighting each other killing each other and torturing everyone, kidnapping them for a ransom etc. I have family in Mexico and where they're from (Michoacan) as soon as it gets dark a cab wont even drive you to your home because they are scared of being killed for their money. It's not all just about drugs it's about gangs too. Another part of Mexico I have family in is Zacatecas and there, there is people that have to PAY kidnappers weekly to not take them away! In Durango where I also have family, they actually have magazines of guys killing other guys decapitating them it is just terrible!! If they know your family has money or that you have family here in the states you are in danger of them kidnapping you or killing you or stealing from you. The drug dealers/gang bangers basically do whatever they want. As I said i have family in Mexico and I don't plan on going over there anytime soon I'm scared to death to get kidnapped over there after all the stories relatives tell me and that magazine i saw of how they torture people no way no Mexico for me anytime soon. It's not only ordinary people in danger of their lives FAMOUS people too! There has been NUMEROUS deaths in the Music industry over the drug cartels also check out the links I sent you!

Apparently there's a problem with increased violence in Mexico at the moment.

I found the following:
But increased violence in Mexico has led the U.S. State Department and some American colleges to warn students to be careful everywhere, not just in border towns.
