Why is the water in Mexico so polluted?

As water runs through watersheds, it picks up microorganisms, such as E.coli, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia from cow waste and Salmonella from chicken waste. These organisms, when taken in by humans, can cause flu-like symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most groundwater is considered to be safe for drinking since it runs through layers of dirt which filter out harmful microorganisms. In the United States, any raw human sewage is required to be treated. Virtually all water has some microorganisms in it, harmful or harmless and in varying amounts. We are used to the water where we live and most people don't become ill from drinking the water they have drunk all their life. So why do we get sick from drinking Mexico's water?

The main reason people from the United States become ill from drinking Mexico's water is because we are not used to the amount or kinds of microorganisms present in their water. The people who live in Mexico are almost immune to the microbes present in their drinking water. So, why are their water supplies so polluted? Their water treatment facilities are not advanced; therefore, large investments are required to improve the quality of Mexico's water.

Mexico does not have the sanitation laws the US does. My grandparents live in a small town south of Guadalajara. They refuse to touch the water. They get bottled water delivered to their house daily.

Some is and some isn't. Like Puerto Vallarta has a first class water system ... and even parts of Mexico City. The problem where I live and many smaller towns is - we are still on septic systems (no city sewer) and it leaches into the ground water.

Poor sanitation.

Most of the area's use ground or well water. The water table, the depth of the water underground, is high and has less rock to filter the rain and runoff water.

I guess it's the lack of interest from the government as well as a lack of education and interest from the people... but I HAVE to say that a looked trough the Internet and Mexico is not the most polluted Country in the world and the water is also not the most contaminated. Go find out!

The water is very polluted there. I went there two years ago to visit my husbands family and we had to order water something like poland springs. You could bath in the water and swin in it but it was bad to drink alot of it. I mean you wouldn't die from it but it would make you get parrisites in your stomach and stuff. It's polluted because they don't have water purification like we do. i had asked my husband why vicente fox who is president there didn't pay for this because it is very important he told me that mexicans like to have money for them selves they don't like spending it . Just like here we have public assistance for everything there many people go hungry everyday. Many live in small straw houses. Where he is from it is like a regular sity but if you hust drive like 20 minutes in any direction it is country and many poor people live there. they are forced to drink the water if they don't have money to order the good water and many people get sick and remain sick because they can't afford doctors. I seen many young children working in grocery stores and washing windows at red lights and it made me sad to see that. Here the president is smart enough to help his own people but there he is gready with money. Now people should relize that mexicans only come here for a better life and to help there familys pay for doctors water and food. They are normal people looking to live like normal people should

As everywhere Mexico has serious pollution problems, and some people does not have the conciousness to keep it the cleaner possible. It is very sad, but do not believe in those comments that says that you can not drink Mexican water, it is of course safer to drink botled water, just as in Canada, UK, Spain... but you won't die for having a shower in Mexico.
At least we don't have a polluted president or nuclear wastes as the USA.
