Why many of the mexican americans hate Mexico? |
I just don't understand that, specially the teenagers, Why their parents don't teach them about the great country Mexico is.
(And yeah... yeah, illegal immigration....
i'm talking about Mexico's great culture, history, cities, civilization, etc, etc. not their economic problems, so you can save your words: If Mexico is so great why they comming here... OK?) |

I'm a mexican, I live in Mexico City so what I am about to say may just be crazy.
I think that 2nd generation Mexican-Americans hate Mexico because they feel they don't belong to Mexico and do not understand it.
Also a part of their hate can come from the racism or xenophobia they get from caucasian americans attacking them just because they are sons of people who in the first place didn't have the right to stay in the US, so it may be that they react against Mexico as a way of trying to fit into the american culture. Its a self defence mechanism in which rejecting their origins is the best way to get out of it, if they don't accept they are mexican then they can be anything else...
It is really sad because as the asker states, Mexico is a great country full of history, traditions, colors and great values.
The economic situation is only secondary to the way they feel about Mexico, that is just something they cannot control and they cannot comment because they don't live in Mexico. |

Same thing happens with all immigrants. Competition for jobs by the second wave of immigrants causes resentment from the immigrants already here.
Also the second wave doesn't know the customs of the new country, so the children of the first immigrants view the new immigrants as ignorant and reflecting badly on the people already here.
The first wave of Irish Immigrants (Called Ulstermen) hated the second wave of Irish Immigrants. Some went so far as to deny their Irish Heritage and claim to be Scotts, and posted signs saying "No Dogs or Irishmen" on their businesses.
The children of the first Italian immigrants resented the lack of knowledge and economic competition of later Italian immigrants. They victimized the new Italian immigrants by extortion and ridicule of their accents and customs.
The current wave of immigrants are Hispanic, and they will follow the same social patterns of the immigrants that came before them. |

Mexico is a beautiful country with a rich culture but not good for the working person. Most of the wealth is held by 1% of the population. The US is getting more like Mexico all the time, but for now there are opportunities in the US which aren't available in Mexico. |

Weechi said it best.
When I was down in Mexico, I felt a tremendous culture shock. I was soaking up my surroundings. I was living and breathing Mexican culture.
Mexico is such a great place. I'm sorry some (not all) Ameicans stereotype the country. It's a wonderful place. Some of the best people who'll you ever meet will be Mexicans. :) :) |

I am not sure ider, and I to have noticed that in My brother, I am smaller than he is, but I consider myself Mexican rather than mexican american, and I would Like to go back to Mexico, I ddnt know that there isn't to many oportunities.... personaly I think that The United Mexican States has richer culture than this of the United States.
I had lived in Mexico for 13 years, until recently so I am really proud of being mexican. |

You know I have thought about that question many times as well...I think its cause they have NEVER actually gone to where there parents lived (mainly cause the parents pride) to see what it is like..I think if they did that that would be a real eye opener for the teenagers..The ones that live around me are use to having everyhting there way..Its kinda upsetting but at least I take my children to know there culture AND I am AMERICAN...no mexican in my blood only my children..ANd they WILL know there culture...I even learned spanish several years ago so they would know the language...I think its georgeous where we go in Mexico every year...
Good Luck~ |

ok, i know that many mexicans don't see it this way...but since the US is so great in diversity, this is how we see it....the country you are born in represents your primary culture. so, if you were born in the US, it's fantastic if your parents want to share stories about their country, celebrate special holidays, visit grandparents back in mexico, etc.. but kids born in the US...the US is THEIR country...and although it would be nice to know about another country, i guess it's not compulsory.
and for people born in mexico and move here....part of the great history of immigration is mixing in and learning a NEW culture. if you want to enjoy your new life, you have to learn a new WAY of life. it doesn't mean you can't appreciate your old way of life, but certain changes are neccessary.
when i lived in mexico, i worked very hard to learn my new language, culture, etc... i didn't spend my time clinging to my old culture. it would have made life very difficult for me. |

Probably because their parents don't teach them anything about their culture and country. Maybe their parents were poor, and so the kids automatically think Mexico is a very poor country. Also, they probably only see negative images of Mexico and Mexicans in the media....
It's totally wrong. I live in Italy now, and if I get married and have kids I'm going to teach my kids the Italian, American, and Mexican culture so that they can love and appreciate all of them. |
