I've been there about 3 times, but absolutely would not go alone. When I went, I was with a guy I know who married a lady from TJ, and she was raised there. They both know their way around, and where to go and where not to go. I'd have been lost without them. I also wasn't used to seeing police standing in pairs carrying assault rifles. Also, the "Federalis" (spelling?) -- Federal Police -- will force their way through heavy traffic when on a call. If they take your mirror off or dent your vehicle.....oh, well....there's nothing you can do about it. Anyway, I've seen them forcing their way through traffic like that. Personally, I'd say go with someone who's been there enough to know their way around, and stay with them. It's interesting to see, but use your head about it, that's all.

One other thought....the fastest way to find yourself arrested is to possess drugs or a gun.....guns are absolutely NOT allowed (they wouldn't even let our military bring in weapons with blanks for a military funeral there -- for the 21-gun salute), and they're always watching for ANY drugs....not a place to go for that.

I live in Tijuana now. I love it over here. I used to live in Los Angeles and can say both cities have their problems and advantages. It just that TJ as much poorer.

I recomend the following: have breakfast at "the yogurt place" its by the beach in playas de Tijuana. next to the bull fighting ring.

if you are into photography, even digital, take pictures of the traffic circles "glorietas" they have very interesting statues.

Have lunch at "la espadana" very good food there.

Maybe relax watching a movie at the VIP theater in plaza rio. watch it in english with spanish subtitles. they have waiters who bring you drinks or popcorn or food.

at the CECUT you can go to the museum and see art, historical atifacts, etc...depending on exhibits.

Drive to Rosarito along the toll road to take in the scenery.

go back on the free road all the way to mesa otay and have dinner at Cheripan. an top notch argentinean resaurant.

cross back into the US from mesa otay,,,the lines are usually shorter there.

have fun!!!

I have never had trouble going clubbing to TJ, however.... behave as you would in the US (not parking illegally, not going to areas that look like ghettos, don't pee in the streets, and the like).

Ensenada and Cabo are much nicer, specially Cabo, so if you get a chance to go, take it!

Tijuana is a busy place. Aside from the tourist street, its a big business town like Chicago. Good prices on faux handbags, Prada and Vuitton. Some nice restaurants and lively clubs. Just behave yourself and you won't get in trouble. Remember people like to tell stories about their trips, see for yourself. You could get e.coli from Trader Joe's spinach.

Thousands of people cross the border daily from San Ysidro to Tijuana without dying, being arrested or contracting a disease. That border crossing is the most heavily traveled along either US border.

Just like any place, any of those things can happen.

I am someone who loves Mexico, and have traveled extensively there. I have little interest in Tijuana, but for many people, it's easy to get to and does have somethings to offer, and their interest are different than mine.

It doesn't have the things that attract me elsewhere in the country. The border towns are not attractive, and they have higher crime rates than nearly everywhere else in the country.

But unless you are going to be involved in some questionable activity, like buying drugs, you should be fine, especially for a daytime trip, BUT a female should not go alone. Like in any new place, be aware of your surroundings.

Most of those who have extremely negative things to say about Mexico have never been there.

You live 15 minutes away and you know nothing about Tijuana. Thats a little strange

You are right to be cautious about entering Tijuana. The streets are dirty and overcrowded, the police corrupt, and the possibility of contracting cholera and dysentary from the food and drink is always a risk.

But, now knowing this, your chances of running into trouble are much diminished. You will carry with you only your ID card and spending money (fives and tens are best), well-hidden in a sock or moneybelt. You will obey all laws, especially avoiding jaywalking, fighting, and being drunk in public. You will not buy food from street vendors nor drink the water. If you get hungry or thirsty, you will eat at an established restaurant, filled with other patrons. You will not wander off alone. You will look both ways before crossing the street and you will watch where you are stepping.

You will survive. In fact, you may even have a great time!
