New president going after the cartels ? HA ! Thats just a media smokescreen. His hand is open for bribes just like it always has and always will. Corruption is prtty much accepted here. Its a frame of mind Hell its a goal. If you get a job , even a traffic cop , your not even thinking the salary or job duties , your thinking about how much $$$ youll make day to day accepting payoffs for running a stoplight.

Seriously , Im an American living here in Acapulco and I've just given a few traffic cops $$ right there on the spot as thats just the way its done here. Its accepted and envied by all. Its a dog eat dog world here.

Cops here all carry automatic rifles. Private security at stores is a common sight - with automatic machine guns. Coke delivery trucks - all have an armed guard. Why ??? The crime dictates it.

Top 3 economic industries - #1 is drugs , #2 - corruption and 3rd is oil. I was told this ( and belive it ) from a very intelligent Mexican friend of mind over beers. Supply and demand as the others have stated and corruption is a way of life. Dont belive that the President is trying to stop it . Its propaganda for the American Gov't . and trust me our Gov't dosent believe one damn bit of it.

Only when the US is able to reduce the drug addiction of its citizens and regulate the gun shows. What chance does Mexico have when the US is so arrogant? This is as much a US problem as Mexicos.

should learn lesson from prohibition, being illegal makes the gangsters money and they will fight to protect it, make it legal and the problem goes away

The money is too great, and everyone has their price. I mean everyone all that read this have one. In most cases it might not be money, but if you had a loved one taken or threatened I would say 99.999 would turn a head to what ever they need too to protect that loved one.

4000 people killed in 5-6 months you say in one small area. How many troops have lost their life in recent Years of fighting.

Food for thought, how many Major bust do you read about every year in the United States. Not very many maybe a handful. Yet the streets are loaded with drugs. Why is that?

I was with law enforcement and I cannot answer the question. I know there is way too much extra effort to bust teens and ruin there lives before they get a good start in life. Parents today smoke marijuana with their kids and think nothing of it. "Its better than drinking" they say.

Doctors treat kids with antidepressants at the drop of a hat. Think back when you were in school if your over 40 how many kids were given medicine for that kind of problem, a few.

What is the answer, if I knew I would have one Son back that was a Heroin addict, and although it was a accident he was electrocuted. Had he not been on drugs it would have never happened.

Is a new President going to help, NO We have to help by asking why do so many drugs come in, well we know why the demand for them, but why when we can send a unmaned plane up a take a certain car from thousands of miles away can we not stop the drugs.

Why not

Sorry I went on so long.

Not any time in the foreseeable future. Too much money is at stake for these hoods to quit. I can't see any lessening of demand here in the states so as long as demand is here, drugs available, there will be cartels transporting it. Simple economics.

No!

Mexico does a poor job of protecting its police officers and soldiers. There just isn't enough money or infrastructure for the government to follow through on its plans.

At a salary of 400 USD/month for a cop, you can imagine how many low-level cops get bribed so the drug assassins can target higher level cops. Or imagine the lieutenant who wants the captain's job, so sets the captain up for a hit while pocketing 2000 USD.

I've been living in Irapuato, GTO for nine months now. Not a lifetime by any means, but clearly enough to see why Mexico can't win its drug war. The army base outside of the city doesn't have the same type of security you see on a US military base. You can basically walk right on and handle your business.

And the poor police officers. Down here in GTO, cops make about 400 USD/month. Most of them walk home after their shifts--IN UNIFORM. Just think how easy it would be to whack a cop who you thought mistreated you or rejected a bribe.

Just imagine how good 3000 USD for access or information to a higher-level officer might look to a low-level cop with 4 kids to feed or someone looking for a quick and easy promotion--getting his boss whacked.

Finally, Mexico is a very fatalistic, complacent society. Most people just accept things the way they are. They figure that as long as they aren't caught in the crossfire, then God's being good to them.

SO NO!
