Would it be dangerous to go to Mexico?

I will be taking a vacation and will be in Texas for about a week, Being so close to Mexico I was thinking about crossing the boarder as kind of a treet for my self. Shopping ect. So many people, I have talked to, say to stay away as I could find enough stuff to do in Texas.
Is it really that bad and what do I look out for? Some tips please.
My wife , who will not be with me, says to stay out of there.
I would think this would be a chance of a life time... Your thoughts please.

Mexico is a wonderful country with many beautiful places.

Unfortunately none are close to the border. Border towns are generally not attractive, if not downright ugly. The northern part of Mexico is the least interesting part. Ciudad Juarez and Nuevo Laredo are place most effective by the drug violence.

Texas border is long, and I don't know what towns are close to where you'll be. However here are some ideas.

If you are in the east of Texas, Matamoros is usually consided the most pleasant of the border towns.

The city of Saltillo is relatively (3.5 hrs.) close to the border, possible to visit on a day trip if you are are close to Laredo,TX. It's somewhat like the colonial cities and further south.

However, if you are renting a car in Texas, don't assume you can take it into Mexico.

"I would think this would be a chance of a life time."

Visiting the border area even if it were safe, is not a place that visiting could be rated "a chance of a life time". The closest place to Texas that could merit such a phrase is Zacatecas. I spent 8 days on my last visit there and could have stayed longer if I didn't have other plans. It is a 10 hours ride away from the border.

should i go to the jewnited states? is it safe?

i hear random people lose their jobs and gun down ten people at a time. i hear they slaughter their entire families for no reason. i hear the gang wars are out of control there. i hear kids execute everyone in their schools.

it is so dangerous here in México, every morning when i go outside there are 842,902,042 decapitated bodies in the street. it is not like we only see that stuff in the news, it's ALL OVER THE PLACE!@#@!#

i'm so scared mr. gringo, can i please go to your "safe" country?

sxmxsxo15
No, i just came back from there its really nice. We didn't see anything bad. Just i don't know if it's a good idea to cross the border.

Malcolm

I live in the south part of Mexico (Cancun) and I can tell you it's very safe here.

Northern part recently has been a little violent but my Father goes to Tijuana, Juarez, Mexicali and Matamoros about twice a month for business trips and he hasn't seen any violence.

I'm not saying there isn't anything and that it's 100% safe. But really the chances you will encounter a shooting between cartels is pretty slim. Specially if you stay close to the commercial zones. Mexico isn't how the media describes it. Most of the people that say that Mexico is a dangerous place probably haven't even been to Mexico.

Anyways in conclusion I think going there for a day, doing some shopping, and coming back won't hurt. Just a few tips is avoid alleys and always walk on main streets and you should be fine.

NOTE: Most people that visit the border of Mexico think that THEY KNOW ALL OF MEXICO. Please don't be like these people.

Mexico is a truly rich country in culture and things can change completely by only crossing one state to another. Visit the Southern part whenever you can and you'll see that This Mexico is far more different from the Northern Mexico.

Enjoy your trip! ;D

My mom just came back from the Texas/Mexico border and had no problems there except for a cab driver that ripped her off. You should be fine, just be aware of your surroundings. My mom stayed at the Holiday Inn and said she felt safe. Safe travels to you.

first off, you have to know how to defend yourself well. I live in Texas. I've also been to mexico before as well. some places are WAY more dangerous than others. Just ask the locals what places you should stay out of. They will know. And also remember, that the disappearing rate in Mexico is 200 people a year. I would say go for it. But hey, it's your choice.

Please read the link that I have attached with this. Your family is VERY right to be concerned. I myself travel to Mexico frequently but I remain on the Riviera Maya and stay in the resort confines. You may want to pay particular attention to the part if this article that mentions tourism as it particularly relates to over the Texas border. There are many other articles regarding this threat. People have been beheaded and the violence is staggering. You may think this is a chance of a lifetime but I can assure you it is a chance not worth taking and you will have other chances in the future after the violence has subsided. Years ago I was in Arizona and crossed the border at to Nogales. Even though it was not violent at that time, the experience was not a pleasant one. The towns are filthy and simply hut after hut of useless souvenirs where people yell at you to buy things from them and in some instances get angry if you don't. This is not worth losing your life over.

DO NOT CROSS THE BORDER!!!!

Many people die every year because of it...

It's very dangerous, TRUST ME!!!

barcovago
You can just cross over into the border towns safely.. go there and have a nice meal and buy a bottle of cheap liquor, but don't go any further. The FIRST 100 MILES SOUTH OF THE BORDER is like a friggin' WAR ZONE... Once you get over 100 miles below the border, it's reasonably safe the rest of the way south, but that first 100 miles is like the old wild west.
