Best bet is to fly to Kathmandu, see a bit of the culture then head to Pokora (1 hour flight or 8 - 12 hour bus ride...through some of the worlds most stunning scenery). From Pokora you can trek a far as you have the energy for, how far you go in a day is up to you. There are numerous places to stay along the way and they are cheap, and I mean cheap (in region of $3-5 per night, dorm style). You dont need a guide, but you might want to invest in a porter to carry your bag...a good way of giving something back to the local community.
