Buddha was born in what is now Nepal, in Lumbini. He was raised in Kapilvastu. At the time, Nepal was not a united country but a region of small kingdoms loosely allied with India. That's why people sometimes say that the Buddha was born in India.

Yes, Buddha was born in Nepal. Don't believe in some silly movie. I've even heard some people saying that Nepal is a part of India which is so ridiculous.

Buddha was born in Nepal 2500 years ago. He was prince of Kapilvastu (Sakya Dynasty). His real name was Siddhartha Gautama.

King Ashok, the famous Indian emperor was very devoted in Buddhism...he erected a pillar exactly where Gautama Buddha was born that pillar is still standing in Kapilvastu, Lumbini region of Nepal.

Read this for more details.

Buddha was born in Kapilvastu of Lumbini, which is a modern day district in nepal. At the time he was born, the modern day nepal was divided into a number of smaller kingdoms and Buddha born as Prince Siddhartha Gautam from the Shakya kings. The place where he was born was never a part of India, but about three hundred years ago was conquered and annexed into the kingdom of Nepal by the Late King Prithvi Narayan Shah. So it is absolutely false to say that Buddha was born in India at anytime of history.

What is true however, is that he got his enlightenment In India and also died in India

Next time a Bollywood movie will claim that Mt. Everest is in India? Are you going to believe that too? I wonder if that movie director was literate or not.

I expected more from bollywood, shame on you...

buddha was definitely born in nepal .. but i am sure even nikhil advani (the director) or akshay kumar knew about it .. he he silly film people .. they should atleast have had some research work done before making this kind of a movie ..

That is true, Siddartha was born in present day Nepal during the Shakya Kingdom

Siddartha achieved enlightenment in India, became the "Buddha", and Buddhism was founded in India.

People always seem confused about that since there were different kingdoms and the names were not the same then as they are now.

Siddartha---born in Nepal.
Siddartha---enlightened in India
Buddhism--Founded in India.
