Curious

Does anybody know what this picture from Kathmandu, Nepal, is?

http://www.nepalholidaytravel.com/images/header.jpg

It looks like a stupa because of the prayer flags. But what's up with the eyes?? What do they mean? I have never seen something like that in Buddhism.

Perhaps a mix of Hindu and Buddhist culture?

Yes, this picture represents the mix of Hindu and Buddhist culture in Nepal. When I visited Nepal in 1998, I was also surprised to see that Hindus and Buddhist people are living in such a harmony in Nepal. There are Buddha's deities in Hindu's temple and Hindu's deities in Buddhist Stupa. There is nothing like you and me. They both worship each others deities. That is the most thing I like in Nepal.
Well, I remember one of my guide describe about those eyes in Syambhunath Temple (they called it monkey temple too) that these eyes are the eyes of Lord Buddha. Those eyes represents non violence, peace, love and spirituality.

Thats definately swayambhunath. It is a buddhist temple / Gumba.

I think that the eyes is of buddha.
In that same picture you can see the hindu temple.

GalNextDoor
that is a buddhist stupa called Swyambhu.. actually the premise has many buddhist as well as hindu temples, but this is the main shrine it is buddhist.. i guess the eyes r regarded as buddha's eyes, but i m not so sure abt it.. but the area is really very pretty.. u can see whole kathmandu valley from there..

Polar Bear
