I lived in India for three years and traveled to Nepal often. I found that some places would take Indian Rupees and some wouldn't. Most preferred Nepalese Rupees however.
If you are staying at a major hotel then they can usually convert it for you at a competitive rate. If not, they will tell you were you can do it. Only stick with major banks (Bank of America or some such) or major money changers like Western Union. Every place you go to change money though will ask for your passport so make sure you don't leave it at the hotel.
If the hotel asks for your passport when you check in, as some do, make sure you reclaim it when you go out to change money. |

You can change Indian currency even in shops and other places as well. But do not take Rs. 1000 , 500 Denominates. These cannot be changed there. You have 100, 50, 10, 5 etc. those can be changed any shops. |
