Nepal is fully safe country to travel now. You can travel Nepal without any trepidation. I been there several time & I did trek in Nepal Mustang Region just last month.
It was really wonderful & I would like to recommend visiting Nepal once in a life time for everybody. There are plenty of things to do & to see. For your safe & well organize holiday trip in Nepal. Mountain Sherpa trekking & Expedition is best Local Company in Nepal. You can visit them at: http://www.guidenepal.com

Have nice & Save holiday

I live in Nepal and I can tell you without any doubts that it is safe for you to travel here. As someone mentioned earlier, there are some worries about the transportation. But that also might not be a problem now as the Maoist former rebels are leading the government and they will be under huge pressure to deliver on this front. The state was not as assertive as it should have been in dealing with this previously.

The state department advisories might be a little more cautious. You will get a real idea about the situation on ground from forums like this. You might want to check other forums like http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forum.jspa?forumID=16&keywordid=68 and http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g293889-i9243-Nepal.html.

i was there in the begining of the year.

there were protests and fires in the streets
but people also made a point to take care of foreigners.

a lot more has happened there since then though

I haven't traveled to Nepal in the last few months, but i am from Nepal and I often talk to my folk back. Only thing that you need to worry about is transportation. Due to protest you never know when the city will be closed. You can still go around site seeing on bicycle or walking. As for as danger for life i wouldn't worry about that. Just avoid trip to remote area of Nepal as long as you stay around Kathmandu you will be fine.

Go to www.travel.state.gov and you'll get your answer. It's pretty unstable there right now, but tourists still go there.

I went to Nepal about a year ago, it was pretty safe the only time i felt a little nervous was when we drove through a protest but basically if you stick to the main attractions you will be pretty safe i also suggest going outside of Kathmandu if you want to see rural Nepal.
