Hostels in Europe: Toplessness or Nudity- What's the truth? |
My girlfriend and I are early-20s Americans, and we are planning a month long trip to Europe this summer. We will go to Germany, France and Italy, and stay in hostels the whole time. We know that attitudes towards baring it all (or most of it) are much more relaxed in Europe, but the rumors we've heard are all over the place.
What should we expect regarding nudity and privacy? We are not particularly worried or bothered by the idea, but would like to know what to expect. Will showers usually be completely private, single-sex locker-room style, open to everyone in the dormitory room? Some of the hostels have a sauna or pool. Would it be common for people to be topless (by the pool) or nude (in the sauna)?
Also, we have heard rumors of every possible magnitude regarding sexual activity in hostels. Some warn of people getting busy in the bunk bed above you, some caution you to always knock loudly before going through a door, and some insist that nobody ever has sex in hostels.
If you have any personal knowledge/experience, it would be greatly appreciated. My apologies to anyone bothered by the slightly racy question; I kept it as clean as I could. |

I can speak about Germany, as I've got lots of experience there. Italy and France, as you get further from Germany are different.
In Europe, nudity is no big thing. You'll see naked people on TV, billboards, in magazines and newspapers, and even sunbathing in public parks. Locker rooms at gyms and public pools may be unisex. Most Germans don't have any qualms about stripping down in mixed company. I've seen German extended families sitting on the beach in their swimsuits, take them off to go swimming, then towel off and put them back on again.
Saunas in Germany and regions nearby will be only nude. Pools are a different story. Some require it, some forbid it. You need to look at the individual rules for the facility. Generally, unless it's forbidden, if you wear a suit is your choice.
As for the hostel, again, there are no hard and fast rules for these. I have a 40+ year-old coworker, married with 2 daughters, who regularly stays at hostels while traveling on business in Germany. He tells me that he can get a private room complete with full bath and shower facilities for a fraction of what a hotel would cost him. The only downside is there is no TV in the room (which he doesn't watch anyway). He doesn't complain about loud / lewd behavior there that I've heard him complain about other places.
That said, all the hostels are independent, and each one will have unique rules and facilities. As for your fellow hostelers, they're all individuals. You can't predict what they'll be doing.
One last note: Unlike here in the states, nakedness in Europe is not equated with sexuality. A naked body is just that: A naked body. |
