Being Nepali and to be frank, Nepali society is a male dominated society. Looking in the society, still in some rural areas more preference is given to male than female. For instance, if a son is born parents are more happy than when a daughter is born. Parents have a thinking that, son will earn and look after them when they will grow old, whereas thinking daughter will marry and go to her husband's so they do not treat equally to her. But remind you, day by day people are getting aware of this and equal opportunity for boys & girls are growing in the country.
And still one can find more men working rather than women in any areas of jobs. I should say the reason is most of the women after getting married settle down to look after their family (-in laws and children) whereas their husband is the bread owner of the family. But again with education and awareness issue growing higher at recent years, women empowerment is also growing. And now most of the women are working in high post earning good respect.
And socially talking about women harassment, it's not that common but still it prevails in some parts of the country. Regarding terms of dowry (although it has been abolished, some places practice as the ritual) women harassment is still heard at times. Apart from that, a drunkard husband can threaten and beat his wife. Actually religiously speaking, there is God in every form here in Nepal. Even women is considered as one but they have to devote to their husband, so at times women hardly fights back to her husband. But all husbands & in laws aren't cruel.
Anyway more than dirt thing, I would like to say we treat women well. I was taught to respect and I do follow it to respect women as God though!
So since you are planning to work and live in Nepal, I recommend it is really safe. Remind you even we consider guests as God (Athiti Devo Bhava meaning Guests are God), so as a matter of that as well, you will get respect here with good hospitality. |

The previous posters have covered quite a lot of topic so no need to repeat what they have already said. The only thing that I want to stress is that perceptions are slowly but surely changing here. There are more opportunities available for women and they are getting more respect from their family and friends than they previously used to get. |

Nepal is really Safe & good country to work for foreigners. I am sure that you will be treated very well there. I found especially the higher community women are dominated by Man. But some communities like Sherpa community women are really freedom. For your safe travel you can make all the necessary arrangement through recognized Local travel agency. In this way you do not have to worry about where to go, where to stay, what to do, how to get hotel, how to travel one place to another place etc. For your primary arrangement you can visit at: http://www.guidenepal.com
In Nepal there are so many adventure things to do like trekking, Rafting, Jungle Safaries etc. Mountain Sherpa trekking & expedition is really very good service Provider Company. I am really very happy with Mr. Sumba Sherpa who guided me in Nepal trekking Last Month. He is really awesome person.
I wish your safe & pleasant Stay in Nepal.

Women in Nepal, as is the norm with all third world countries, are treated like pieces of flesh. Nepal has very high women and child trafficing rates even among the poorest countries of the world. Even in the west, women are finding difficult to gain acceptance on par with men, and the situation is only bound to be magnified in poorer countries.
Having said that, you should really not have much of a problem, because foreigners, as again is the norm, are treated like gods. You opinion of their country and their people matters a lot to them. Its just that this whole women suppression thingummy has been going on for centuries, most women don't realize they are being suppressed. You will mostly encounter sweet people who bend over their backs to make your stay and work extremely pleasant. you will always have someone to baby sit your kids, or take you out on a guided tour. They will do their best to not expose you to the harsher realities of their land.
Trust me you will like it there. And if you do, dont forget to let me know about it. Enjoy your time there. :) |
