Planning on staying around Kathmandu, any tips or things i should do/see while there?
We are planning on being pretty adventurous but don't have time for any planned tours etc.
Thanks!!...
We're thinking of doing the everest base camp trek in November. However I've had (albeit second hand) a very bad review, claiming the trek was overcrowded and "full of s**t" (I think he meant literally).
We've done other treks before (e.g. Annapurna base camp, Kilimanjaro etc) and really enjoyed them so we aren't particulalrlyy squeamish. However if it is just a dirty, overcrowded slog I'd rather do something else.
Can anyone let me know if this bad report is true or not?
Thanks.
PS Any alternative trek ideas would be appreciated.
PPS If we do go would you recommend tea houses or camping as a better experience?
It's true that Everest Base Camp receives lots of tourist each year and there is maximum crowd in these places. Apart from it there is some environmental problems due to heavy pressure from the tourist.
If you want to enjoy the peaceful environment, lovely atmosphere one of the another new destination would be travelling in non touristic areas like.. Jumla Rara Circuit.. or have some Village Tours.. which have significant enjoyment. Teahouses trek are not as enjoyable as Camping Trek in my point of view, I there fore would suggest you to have Camping trek.
Other potential itinerary would be:
1. Langtang Trek ( http://www.a1excursion.com/details/Trekking_in_Nepal/'Langtang_Trek'/12 )
2. Jumla Rara Circuit ( http://www.a1excursion.com/details/Trekking_in_Nepal/Jumla_Rara_Circuit_Trek/92 )

Our Man In Bananas
when I did it it was ok, but that was about 10 years ago.
I'd suggest you ask on the LP Thorntree as you're more likely to hear from someone who has done it recently.
I'd think it was no worse than the Annapurna trek for crowding...
HTH
An alternative would be to go into SW China, and trek towards Everest from the Tibet side maybe
Or you could try trekking in North Vietnam, that's completely unspoilt.
The final suggestion is the Mountains Of The Moon in Uganda - but be warned- it can be tough in places!
