Gorkhali
Kakarbhitta border is safer than other border points. However, Indian police are notorious. If you are of Indian origin then no problem from police of either sides. If you are of Nepalese origin problem from Indian Police. If you are a foreigner and look like a foreigner problem from Indian police again.

They let u in there is really no haressment but u have to dole out money on small check points While getting back the Indian border may stop & check u all depends on the day of travel how the police is/ moreover on the siliguri road they have mobile custom che ckers who can stop u so be careful but shooping is no fun now as most shops have closed done in &near kakarvita

Not usually, and if you are from Gorkha ancestry, you will never get harrassed or caused any inconvinience in Nepali side of Sunauli or Kakarbhitta.

Generally, it's not the concern of Indian police, but they once asked for identity and took out some stuffs (chocolates etc.) from my bag at Sunauli (in 2003). I never got harrassed by any side anytime after that.

Bribery used to be a problem, but simultaneous presence of army, police and armed force at border these days has reduced such activities.

Don't "show" excessive electronics in your body (keep in bag). Better not to try crossing border with more than one personal electronic items like laptop, I-pod, cell phone, camcoder etc. Carrying a single piece is usually acceptable for Nepali post guards.

I recommend Kakarbhitta for you, not Sunauli.

It was always day when I crossed these two borders, but I know one of the posts in close at about 7pm and open at about 7am, or practically when it is dark.
