Kathmandu for a solo female traveller: safe or not? |
Hi people! I'm going to Nepal for a visual research in May and I'm super excited to gather as much information as possible about the country and to plan my two weeks trip. :)
I was initially thinking of checking in to a backpackers' hostel to minimize the accommodation cost... However, I was told by a friend that some of these hostels could be rather unsafe. She said that when she went to Bangkok, her travel companion was being molested when she was walking alone in the middle of the night from the room to the common toilet ... Yes it's true that it did not happen in Kathmandu, but however it made me think twice! My lecturer advised me to pay more to get a room with bathroom attached; as it might be somewhat safer. Well, due to the limitation of the budget and the ambitious plan, I would still prefer to stay in a cheaper place.. but of course I won't sacrify my safety!
Ladies (and gentlemen), please do share your thoughts / experience/recommendation/tips!! Thank you in advance! :) Additional Details hi there! yea i just checked some sources online as well as 'The Rough Guide to Nepal' book... and it seems that a decent accommodation with bathroom attached would cost me about NRP400 in Kathmandu.. I wonder if it is up to date. If it is so, then there should be no problem :)
Anyways thanks a lot for the information and advice, guys.. and mogy, yes i will share with you later on in may, if you are still around!
Hope to hear (or rather read) more replies here!

Kathmandu is very much safe for female travellers. There will not be any problem for you. There is one very good international student's hostel too and your accommodation will be cheaper even with attached rest room. Please email me for the further details if you want it. I can even provide you with my local contact number and will provide all the support that you'll be needing. In Nepal we believe that "Athiti Devo Bhawa" means Guests are Gods. |

hi responding to your question. I say that Nepal is Safest destination in South Asia. i have been working in this field for a longtime i used to work in a volunteer organisation that they placed international volunteers in different parts of Nepal. so i have got plenty of experince about how safe is Nepal.. i am currently living in Sydney ( arrived 2 months ago) if you are travelling with low budgets you can find cheapest hotels 8 - 10 USD per day ... with attach bathroom in kathmandu and other bigger city Pokhara. for the Kathmandu i can recommend you one chepast hotel called "TIBET PEACE "which has got nice garden as well as nice staff. we used to use that hotel for our volunteer stay. So i can guarntee that you will be satisfied. and one another thing there is cheaper resturant and bar in the hotel as well. if you want to know more please you can email me . i will help you to make your Journey memorable. CHEERS.... |

Worry less on safe or not. It is safe to visit Kathmandu or Nepal in total. It can not be generalized with a single case either in Bangkok or anywhere else. Accidents or extreme conditions can be anywhere even at your birth place. My suggestion is take a modest hotel or guest house and do your research with the help of locals. If you have local supervisor or friends it would help you to find someone to assist you in the field. If you know someone who has already visited/studied at your university, they will be helpful too. Good luck and do share your experience later. |

Kathmandu is very safe. There aren't hostels as such but many cheap hotels - nearly all have private bathrooms for around $8 to $10 a night. Kathmandu Guest House is good, so is Hotel Karma. They are both in the middle of the tourist area and safe and clean. If you are a female travelling on your own ALWAYS consider safety before cost. If you can't afford a decent safe hotel STAY AT HOME. |

I cannot guarantee you that Female is safe to go alone anywhere part of world. But as long as you are strong enough then I am sure you can travel safely in Nepal no matter which part. |
