It's way cheap compared to the taxi fare compared to most of the world.

Don't hesitate to bargain, and you will easily get somebody who will take you there for less than 500, that's just 7$.

The current taxi fare has been changed due to hike of oil price. Hence, just after custom checkout, ask for airport taxi counter. That is fixed price (earlier price was Rupees 400, pay the cost and get a receipt). Normal taxis are available outside the terminal. Taxi drivers may come to you to use their taxi. Actual price is lower than airport taxi (turning on the taxi fare meter) but usually they don't turn on the meter for airport passenger and ask Rs 400-1000. Decide the amount before the driver loads your luggage.
In Kathmandu, the taxi price is not based on number of passenger hence you can travel single or many for the same price.

Taxi system in Nepal is very bad. They will rip your money if you are new to that place. Normally outsider taxi will take 350-400 Rupees from Airport to Thamel and same destination Airport Taxi will take you in double. Just set your final amount what you gonna give them before they touch your Baggage.

An airport taxi is more expensive than one form the street and with petrol prices running so high, they are less and less willing to negotiate. When exiting the international airport, walk down the sidewalk towards the departures. Taxi drivers will approach you. Ask their price. It will be outrageous. Offer half. They will react. Smile, then ignore them and keep walking towards departures. At least one driver will follow lowering his price. Keep walking. As his price drops, decide if it is acceptable to you. About 350 would be a good price, I think. If you make it to departures, catch a driver from the street who is dropping off his passenger. Say, "Meter?" If he agrees to use his meter, that is the best you can do and the rate is fair for both of you. Do not try to beat him down any lower. If he makes an offer, it will almost always be lower than the airport taxi. Thamel is a big place--and often congested with vehicles. If you are going to a specific hotel, the price will be easier to set than if you are going to drive around looking for a hotel.
