I was in Kathmandu for five months in 2005 as a woman alone. I don't find that it is really an unsafe country but I wouldn't go out late at night. My female Nepali friends didn't seem to be out past 10pm so that seems to be the norm for people. I'd say the exception might be if you stay in a touristy place such as Thamel, in which case there will be other foreigners around later at night.

Things have changed a lot in Nepal since 2005. Specially last 2 years have been very bad . Please do not venture out of your hotel after dark, thats my sincere advice.
