I am a Nepali citizen.
Gurkhas were Nepalese soldiers who fought British army when they occupied whole of India and proceeded to Nepal. But Nepal is a hilly and mountaineous country and these soldiers fought with bravery, rolling stones from the top; woman and children took part as well. British army was unable to win (gorrila type fighting required) or lose (they have sophisticated weapons) while Gurkhas had khukuri . So, a treaty took place called sugauli sandhi. When Britain had managed to take over whole world, it didn't manage to enter Nepal so british government was full of praise for Gurkhas. So, they decided to recruit them every year in certain numbers already from that time till today. There is even statues of Gurkhas in front of army headquarters in Britain. Today, all difficult places to fight like Afghanisthan etc are selected for Gurkhas since they are better at harsh conditions. Visit these sites for more info.

Gurkhas are known as a brave soldiers since decades.
They are famous for their loyality and good service around the world.
The Gurkha soldier recruits were mainly drawn from several ethnic groups. When the British began recruiting from the interiors of Nepal these soldiers were mainly drawn from Magar, Gurung, Rai and Limbu, although earlier British Gurkhas included Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Assamese and others as well.
After the British left India, Gorkhalis continued seeking employment in British and Indian forces, as officers and soldiers.
Under international law present-day British Gurkhas are not treated as mercenaries but are fully integrated soldiers of the British Army, operate in formed units of the Brigade of Gurkhas, and abide by the rules and regulations under which all British soldiers serve. Similar rules apply for Gurkhas serving in the Indian Army.
The Gorkha war cry is "Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali" which literally translates to "Glory be to the Goddess of War, here come the Gorkhas!" |
