Why did Sherpas never climb Mt. Everest before Westerners?

If they were such skilled mountaineers, why didn't they do it? Was it that the mountain was sacred? Was it that they had no need to do it? Is it only modern Western culture that promotes a sense of personal vainglory in "conquering" a mountain?

Sherpas are not aimless and never thought that way, Only thing they had no proper education and equipments to climb the mountains. Once Western people started to climb mountains and they knew about climbing. Now a days they ( Sherpas) are faster, smarter and dedicated.

It is because climbing is something that most of the people of Nepal do as a matter of compulsion, not as a favourite pastime. Sherpas have been a climber long before anybody ever thought of climbing the Everest, but they never ventured it simply because they didn't think of doing it for any reason. Since there are so many reasons now, they have been the pacesetter in this field.

Westerners would not have been able to climb Everest with out the Sherpa people. Nepal is a very poor country. The Nepalese were never equipt financially to do theses things. They are such strong humble, intelligent and resilient people. There are different views among the Sherpa. Some don't want to climb it and see it as a sacred place. Others still see it as a sacred place and love and respect it while wanting to climb it.
There are thousands of Sherpa people who make a good living out of mountaineering in the Himalaya. Since the 50's when Edmond Hilary and Tensing first climbed Everest the region has boomed. There are small airports and hospitals there now. There are schools there now. There were NO schools there before. There is money and business coming into the communities where there was very little before. Many people who travel to Nepal and trek through those beautiful mountains and meet the lovely people fall in love with the place. They help the communities by being there and many sponsor children so they are able to go to good schools.
Going to Everest is so much more than "conquering a mountain" it is a huge experience..even just going to Base Camp is just BRILLIANT.
Go there and you will see.
Oh..I forgot to mention. Tensing Norgay is a Sherpa! And he was the first (or second, nobody really knows for sure) to get to the top!

The sherpas are too humbled, they are modest, you can call them losers and aimless but they are the best, it is really hard to be satisfied. Climbing had no value for them, some of them have pounds of gold but they dont brag, some have no money and dont panic.

Other thing is they had no equipments, but as they were not interested they did not make them.

Edit: Aimless means, there was no point for them to climb the mountains.
