cool man!!!
backpackers are just awesome and soooo cheap in nz! you should become a member of any of the 2 big companies ( I joined BBH and also got extra money for calling in the card)
I would recommend kayaking in the coromandel peninsula (not far away from auckland)
black water rafting in the waitomo caves
rotorua for zorbing, swoop, etc and so much fun stuff to do!!!!!!
i did my skydive in taupo and the views of the lake are AWESOME!!!!!
i would also go to Mt Ruapehu (mt doom in lord of the rings) for snowboarding!! give it a go man!
u know u can jump out of the skytower in auckland?? hehehe
queenstown is the best place for bunjy jump and other adventurous stuff, not sure if u'll have time though...
you could also try some hiking in Arthurs pass (not far away from christchurch and its beautiful)
have u thought about rentin a car?? very cheap!! the cheapest company is a2b rentals!!
enjoy nz! sweet as! ;)

you could hire a car and travel down yourself
new zealand is awesome for activitied
there are tours though that do everything for you and include a lot of activities stopping at the main tourist attractions
kiwi is young everyone gets drunk and sleeps around on i ve had aa few friends go on it and loved it but it wasnt what i was looking for
i chose stray bus as it involved more site seeing more varied age group and it was more off the beaten track - age group was 20 to 30 on stray lots of different nationalities
hop on hop off but if you could stay on the one bus check the website out
there is also adventure tours and magic

main places to visit on limited time
raglan - amazing surfing
rotorua its alright
taupo great place small town good walks cheapest sky diving in new zealand good pubs
waitomo amazing caves
wellington nice city good nitelife studenty city

south island
abel tasman - walking canoeing microlite flights awesome
stunt planes you can pilot skydiving sailing its fantastic

franz joseph glacier walk have to do the full day hike

wanaka during ski season really cool cardrona great resort cheap snow boarding passes for 3 days really great place to stay like a small queenstown

queentstown fantastic can get a bit crazy close to snow fields cheaper to hire car here than wanaka
bunji jums canyon swing jet boat sky dive white water rafting river surfing
lots of drinking
its a great place you could spent 2 weeks here alone
i did

christchurch not much happening here butusually good to chill before leaving

iff you have time kaikaura is great for dolphin swimming and whale watching

so much to do

if you think you may not have much time you can get really cheap flights from auckland to queenstown and spend most time there

Fly in to Auck spend one night there go base jumping the sky tower (tallest in the Southern Hemisphere), head down to Taupo go white water rafting there and other stuff, get to Ohakune, the backpacker ski capital of NZ, you ski at Tongariro or Ruapehu its good boarding and a little different from the South Island Experience. You also try a field like Porters Heights or Mt Hutt out the back of Christchurch. White Water Rafting on the Rangitikei River between Taupo and Wellington. Do the ferry trip from Wellington to Picton (The South Island). You can kayaking at Abel Tasman National Park near Nelson, in July the weather is e comparatively warm there, it will besunny and not crowded.

Have fun. Don't forget where you are staying at the end of the night and get a 24 hour access.

its not HOOKER FALLS its huka falls.
try christchurch!
and mt ruaphu the snow and ice taste like carrots!
yum.i went on ski camp-its very cheap.

Two weeks is not really enough time to cover it all, try and get a relocation rental car in Auckland and head for Rotorua and Taupo, Lots of fun things already described by others, Or rent a camper or van and travel at your own leisure, [ bit more expensive] Dont miss the Marlbourough Sounds on your way and travel either West Coast or East Coast and take in the Whale watch at Kaikoura, Christchurch has lots of clubs and bars with live music, N,Z music centre in my opinion.Depending on your time limits head for Dunedin and Queenstown, Lots of outdoor stuff already described, Take in Milford if you can, Keep in mind it takes about 6 hours to drive from Queenstown to Christchurch[ inland route]

Head down to waitomo caves and Taupo go out to Hooker Falls taupo thats an awesome sight. If you fancy a sit in some thermal pools there debretts at taupo http://www.debrettsresort.co.nz/ the mountaains are on the other side of the lake for some adventure http://www.backpacklaketaupo.com/ I don't know if you have time to go to Queenstown the extreme sports capital of the world. If you do want to go you wouldn't have time to linger anywhere else

bellaaaaa :)
well i would defenitely recommend that if youre going to new zealand to go to the south island first of all.
and secondly, go to queenstown!
they have rafting, two main snow mountains with snowboarding, skiing, tubing etc., beautiful lake, local activities, in winter they have the winter festival, deer park, mining town, treks nearby, tours to the doubtful and milford sound depart in queenstown and heaps, heaps more. its great!
and wanaka has the famous puzzling world with one of the biggest mazes ever and illusion rooms etc. and also a great ski mountain that gets heeapps of snow.
christchurch is good for scenic drives, clubs, pubs, local normal stuff like museums and science centres lol.
dunedin is good for small city life, with clubs and pubs just not so packed and all, and nearby is a beautiful bay, worth driving to!
kaikora (right at the top of the south island) is excellent for whale watching, where you see heaps of whales, albatrosses and seals. and just on the side of the road are seals sitting there. they have great crayfish too and heaps of attractions nearby.
the north island is famous for volcanos and hot mud baths and trekking and traditional maori stuff, make sure you see a maori dance while you're there.
i hope you have a great trip, enjoy! :)

You should check out..

North Island

Auckland - clubs/pubs, go up the skytower etc
Rotorua - extreme activities, zorb, luge, gondala, mud pools, maori cultural stuff, white water rafting etc
Taupo - has mountains about an hour away for snowboarding
Wellington - clubs/pubs

South Island

Marlborough Sounds - insane scenery
Christchurch - clubs/pubs etc
Queenstown - extreme activities, bungee jump, snowboarding
Wanaka - snowboarding

Thats a few places i would reccommend but there are places in between you should check out too.
