Cafe Roma is my favorite. It overlooks the Avon and is just a couple of blocks from the square.

The Coffee House is also good- but it is nearer to the Arts Centre.

A good (different) place to eat would be Joes Garage. Their food is not the same as you get every day and very tasty. Well cooked meals, pleasant, friendly service, good coffee AND a price range to satisfy most people.
In Hereford Street one block back towards Latimer Square from Manchester. That is 2 blocks from the square.
Oh and the music is awesome, I often find myself singing away to songs I've known forever.
Well worth the visit and you'll go back to try something else as the menu looks soooo good.
