Advice : Gifting Ideas? |
I need some suggestions.
Soon I will be taking a flight to New Zealand and will be staying there for a little under 2 months on an exchange trip. I am from the United States.
While I am there, I will be staying with a host family. One of the girls in the family already came to my school for a month earlier this year.
I was thinking it might be nice to bring gifts for the family, the school, and whatever friends I may make while I am at the school, along with any teachers that I want to say thank you to. (FYI: The school is an all girls school, and there are both male and female teachers)
What might be some good things to bring?
I do not want to bring things like pins, rather things that people may actually want. :)
Thank you! :)
If you have any questions for clarification, please ask and I will edit to answer.
P.S. The family I am staying with has a mother, father, 1 son (18 yrs), and 3 daughters (13, 15, ans 17yrs) in case you needed to know.
Also -
If you had a person coming from the U.S. what would you like to receieve as a gift? |

Clothes! Just like a simple tshirt or something cool like that, maybe with the name of the state/city you are from.
Sweets/Candy from there, we don't have a lot of things like [laffy taffy, tropical skittles, baby ruths, butterfingers, mr goodbars, blow pops, tootsie pops, sweet tarts, pop rocks... etc] .deprived I know!!! =P
A small flag. I know it might seem lame but it's a cool little gift that they can keep to remember you
Hey an all girls school in Auckland, is it Diocesan or St Cuths? I used to go to Dio =]
Good luck, hope I helped!
P.S. Pins aren't lame! You should bring a few to give to people at the school. It's a perfect little gift, I remember when some girls from Japan came to school once, they brought pins with them and EVERYONE wanted one. But sadly I didn't get one lol =[ *sniff*
They also brought some mini coloring pencils and gave those out too, and the people who got them thought they were so cool. |

Some ideas:
Chocolates, food or lollies that we can't get in NZ. (I hear Bon bons mentioned on TV alot.. what are those??)
Tapestries or paintings with a Native American feel
CDs with Native American music (I used to like Robie Robertson & the red Road Ensemble)
Small knick knacks of American icons (eagles, cowboys etc)
Go to a tourist shop and have a look at the stuff in there. Think of things that are uniquely US.
Hope it helped |

A book on the area where you live one with good photos in. That is always interesting and then they can see a little more about yourself. |

Do check out http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/enter/declare, as several of the items mentioned above may have issues, although commercially prepared and packaged foods like chocolates, candies or cookies are usually fine. (The risks they are after is plant and animal matter and seeds - this can affect some native craft items, although commercial tourist goods are usually prepared to an adequate standard.) |

Go to your local tourism Office or Public Relations Office.
They will have an array of small books, brochures, maps and photos about of your area that you could bring.
Go to your school councillor and see if you can get some school pennants or flags.
Some articles about the history of your school and locality, either in book form or on DVD.
Don't, whatever you do, and in spite of others recommending it, bring any food or food items. It will be taken off you at Customs on entry into NZ, and your name will be forever flagged on the Customs computer.
For the principal of the school you will be attending, bring a letter of introduction from your own principal.
I have also suggested in the past, and those who have done it have been overwhelmed by the act, of bringing a letter from your Mayor and presenting it in a formal ceremony to the Mayor of the town you'll be staying in. Great publicity for both towns. |

That sounds like an awful lot of presents, are you going to have room for your own clothes in your luggage!? I don't get how you can buy a present for an actual school......
To be honest we get everything American here so I can't think of anything. I didn't buy anything when I went to America, apart from a New York cab magnet which I still have on my refrigerator 10 years on. People usually want that kind of thing when they've been there themself though, not for an American to come here with it. I guess get tourist tea towels from whatever region of the US you're from, or coffee mugs from a tourist shop, but some people think all those things are lame.
I honestly wouldn't bother too much. Just get a big box of Hershey's chocolates for your host family & leave it at that. You don't get much room in your luggage you know & it's restricted by weight re how much you can take on the plane. Certainly your teachers are not going to expect gifts. They might think you're bribing them for better grades! You might not even like them! And you can't buy presents for future friends. It's nice you think that way, but it's a little over the top. |
