Auckland's a tip! It's boring, poorly planned, and doesn't function. It has all the ugly things a city much bigger has and none of the nice things. Despite being the largest metro in NZ it's also very suburban, and has less cosmopolitan culture than Wellington or Christchurch.

For some reason the ignoramii who inhabit the place think it's this wonderful place and that the rest of NZ (and probably the world) is missing out on something. It's only when they actually spend time in any other city does the obvious dawn on them; Auckland's a tip. Sadly the environment there seems to make most of them boring narrow-minded lame-oh's with no social graces or clue about the wider world.

Really it's just a poor man's Sydney.

And despite being the most one-eyed about NZ it is the most atypical place in New Zealand.

The reason why the people run it down is bacause they've seen a yardstick by which Auckland falls short.

Yes is is a beautiful city. Every city has its problems, gangs, etc.

But the only thing that puts me off Auckland is the lack of public transport. I've been in cities with over 10 million people and its been easier to get around.

I would love to visit Auckland, New Zealand. I live in the Chicago suburbs in the U.S., and have always wanted to go there. I want to see your lakes, volcanoes, bridges, Westhaven Marina, shopping centers, Auckland Botanic Gardens, Auckland Zoo, Sky Tower, Mt. Eden, a cricket or rugby game, and, of course, interact with the people of Auckland. I'd like to try your local cuisine, too.

I live in Auckland and I love it! I live in South Auckland and the gang thing is just blown out of proportion. You just notice it when you look for it.
I visit Auckland city a lot and love it! It is the best place in the world! There are so many things to do that are fun! =]

It's nice but still just another city. It isn't that I don't like it I just hate it win tourists only go to Auckland and assume this is what NZ is like instead of actually going out and experiencing NZ as the majority of NZ is nothing like Auckland.

I'm a born & bred Aucklander but have travelled extensively & lived in Sydney for 3 years. I think it's when you go overseas & come back you recognise how great NZ is & how beautiful Auckland is. Did you know there are 100 beaches in & around Auckland? I think that's awesome. I love the Western Beaches, especially Karekare & Bethells Beach (that cafe caravan there is so cool, like Ponsonby out at a remote beach!). The view from the summit at Rangitoto on a clear day is amazing & being able to go to Waiheke for cheap weekends away (especially if you go budget & stay at a hostel).

My favourite thing is to walk around Tamaki Drive from Okahu Bay to St Heliers, good exercise & a nice atmosphere & loads of people around on summer nights, even late. I also love the Auckland film festival (much better than the acclaimed Toronto one, in my opinion) - especially if you sit upstairs at the Civic theatre under the fake night sky. And the Clocktower at Auckland University is pretty lit up at night, especially under a full moon.

Going up Mt Eden is amazing when you consider you are standing on a dead volcano, surrounded by cows & sheep, yet you are very close to the city & can see the city skyline & Sky Tower. Not many cities where all those things would occur so close to downtown!

People in NZ outside of Auckland hate us. So much so that when I travel around NZ I always lie to people & pretend I'm from some quaint little town like Cambridge. Otherwise you start to wonder if they'll spit in your food out the back when you're in a cafe! It's interesting that they want your money but don't want your Aucklandness!

Our crime is blown out of proportion & you can easily tell by looking up world rankings online for crime. Australia has much higher crime than us, especially for sex crimes.

What I don't like about Auckland is the small town mentality that you sometimes get, which culminates in the tall poppy syndrome, jealousy & gossip. I find the North Shore the worst for that. I've lived in several properties on the Shore & have never met such nosey gossips in the workplace & next door. It's like my neighbours are my paparazzi or something!! But Central Auckland & the Eastern suburbs are no problem, there's more of a live & let live mentality.

I have relatives in Papatoetoe, I don't like South Auckland at all. They say they feel safe living there but they are always mentioning P Lab busts that have occured in the next street to them, etc! And 2 of them were mugged by the same girl in their own street in broad daylight! She got caught in the end & they're having to go to court, etc to get her convicted. I would never work at night in a service station or takeaway outlet in South Auckland as too likely to get held up by armed robbers. I would never walk round there at night either, not just due to bad people but also all the nasty dogs that roam around.

Auckland is a great place. The rest of NZ don't like it because it's too big for them and I think they are jealous. I think Wellingtonians are a strange lot.
