Any recommendations of what to do in the Christchurch area? Thought we would have only 1day there but have 4?

We wouldn't mind taking a train or bus somewhere.

Depending on what you like and how far you are willing to travel from Christchurch, I'd actually go on up to Kaikoura and do some whale watching or swim with the dolphins. Its great if you're into eco-tourism and its a beautiful area. But it is a trip (a little less than 2 hours by car/shuttle).
If you want to stay in Christchurch, hit the Christchurch Art Gallery at Worcester and Montreal and the International Antarctic Center near the airport. Other than that, Christchurch is nice for walking around town and just seeing the sites or shopping, and for grabbing a drink and a book and relaxing in Cathedral Square.

Definitely go up the gondola to the top of the Port Hills, you get a great view and there is an exhibition on stuff like how the Christchurch area was formed geologically, history of Christchurch settlement, and not to mention a fantastic view of Chrictchurch and the countryside and mountains beyond. You can also see Lyttleton and Diamond Harbour on the other side of the Port Hills.

GO ON THE GONDOLA SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!Take the old train that goes around the city.that's what i did only there for 3 days but theirs always something to do.good restaurants dotted around the place as well.

Take the TranzAlpine across to the West Coast!
http://www.tranzscenic.co.nz/services/alpine.aspx
Departs Chch and Greymouth daily, a 4 1/2 hour train journey through some of the most stunning scenery anywhere!
Or the TranzCoastal, up to Picton via Kaikoura - also departs each end daily.
Check the AA travel website for things to do in Chch itself - go to the Antarctic Centre, climb the Cathedral spire, punt on the Avon, wander through the Botanical Gardens... You'll soon be wishing you had a week there!

Go to Kaikoura, it'll be an unforgettable experience. Also there are a lot of wineries around Chirstchurch. Then you can drive west on the 7. You'll hit hot springs , magnificent mountains and rivers and pristine lakes.
