The correct answer is no.
The Maori and the Australian native have nothing in common.
The Thor Heyerdahl theory of the Polynesians coming from South America has been discredited.
Recent research into languages, backed up by DNA testing, now suggests that Korea was probably the jumping off point for Pacific Ocean dwellers (excluding Melanesia and Micronesia).
Have you wondered why the Maori people can pick up the languages of Korea and Japan readily?
Australians probably migrated through the Indonesian Archipelago and Java.

added: Mareeclara is not wrong. One of the books I have studied on this subject is "The Seven Daughters Of Eve."
Very readable, and easy to follow.
I also admit to not having heard the term 'Austronesian' before. Did you make it up?

Maori and pacific polynesians are all from southern Taiwan (made in Taiwan!!).
THere is a book called the seven daughters of eve in which the author who used mitochondrial DNA to determine the origins of people in europe , but it all started when he looked at the polynesians. He found they came from Taiwan based on this.
A group of native Taiwanese ( not the chinese who now live in most parts of Taiwan) started moving east across the
Pacific ( I think there is talk of some moving via papua new guinea as well which is why their hair etc is a bit more wirey) then they eventually moved south and finally to NZ.
THere is evidence of the art which changes across the pacific, lauguage which is similar to other groups eg samoan, vanatu? and even native taiwanese. I watched a documentary where a maori goes across the pacific looking at these things and ends up in Taiwan and meets a girl who looked more chinese (due to chinese inbreeding) but her brother/sister shared remarkable similarites to the maori and they compared customs, art and langauge which had a lot of similaries. They think the travellers left Taiwan about 3-5000 years ago.
This compares to the Aborigenes who have been in Australia for 40,000-50,000years!!! They came from Africa via the coast probably over 100,000 years ago and gradually made their way to Australia....completely different origins, culture and language. |

From what I have just read from a few google links, yes they are. Austronesians range from South East Asia through to Polynesia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Easter Island. Most of what I read relates to the language of Austronesians, described as a language family. |

Assuming you're not doing another really poor attempt at wind-up...
There's no such ethnicity as Austronesian. Austronesian is a broad classification based on language that encompasses Polynesian, Micronesian, Melanesian and many related peoples in Taiwan (where they originate) and throughout South East Asia.
Maori's are of POLYNESIAN ethnicity, which are within the broader Austronesian linguistic group.
EDIT: GUYS! the term 'Austronesian' has not nothing whatsoever to do with Australia or the Aboriginals. |

If I knew the correct answer to that one I'd be multi-rich. Nobody has been able to establish from where the Maori people came to New Zealand. All one hears is "Legends" handed from one generation to the next by mouth. It's a bit like a lot of indigenous people throughout the world, and frankly who really cares where they came from, they are here and that's it. |

No, thier just people who are sort of getting what they wnat from the government. I think its selfish how they want prison for thier own but her this out::
just over 4 million in NZ
68.95% Of the people in prison are maoris....
Also, They are getting free schooling, but what about the white people...?
They have to work for it.
Maoris with cancer are getting free or discounted cancer relief,
the white people are still paying thousands to keep thier kids alive... |

I think that Maoris are of Austronesian ethnicity. They are basically native australians and new zealanders! |
