I grew up and live again in Marlborough...also known for earthquakes and for the most part they are almost exciting. This is because they are small to moderate. I have been in 2 that I would consider big and one made me jittery.
In Christchurch there was a 6.7 one in mid 90's and it was the first time I saw swinging pot plants and it went on for a long time. My young cousin was crying becasue of the noise so we went outside and I felt the ground going up and down and saw the trees swaying! I was more nervous later when we got some decent aftershcoks.
I was in Oamaru when there was a 7.1 earthquake around fiordland..the house i was in kept shuddering ( in oscillations)...all I was worried abotu was my tv stand was going to come off as it was not screwed on!
If it was a BIG one I would be more scared but I quite enjoy them for the most part |

No not really. But if there is a big one, and can be frighting. The small ones feels like when a big truck drives pass your house |

it depends on the category of the quake.
we had one last year and it shook the house and i woke up thinking a train was going by on the tracks next door. but when i woke the news said it was a category 2 earthquake. |

I used to live in Hawkes Bay (known for earthquakes). There were frequent earthquakes, and because I grew up with them I never found them to be very scary (none of them were ever very serious). They can be scary for some people, but if I ever felt one, I wouldn't stop and go under a door frame or anything haha. I probably should have, but I just went about what I was doing.
They aren't too frequent in the Auckland area, but if you do feel one and feel scared by it, just crawl under a stable table, such as a sturdy dining table. |

During the "89 Loma Prieta earthquake in the San Francisco area, which knocked down double decker freeways, and only killed a few score people thanks to the fact that the World Series had just started, pittiing the 2 Bay area teams (the Giants and the A's) against one another, accounting for an almost empty freeway system for the first time in eternity, I was on a beach just south of town, and it felt...wonderful. Delightful. We lived just off the beach, and when we got home, the TV, which I had definitely turned off, was going at 100% volume, and San Francisco was burning. |

You've never felt an earthquake, and you live in new zealand?
Well, the tinys arn't scary at all, but they might be to you because you have never felt them, the really big ones are scary, but i have only felt one.
The tiny ones- Have you ever walked across a bridge when cars are going past? How the bridge sort of shakes? Have you ever been up the top of the Sky Tower? How it sways in the wind? Have you ever just been standing randomly in any random place, and someone thunders past you? How the ground tremors?
Thats what the tiny earthquakes feel like.
the bigs ones are all that times a million. |

If you're not in any danger of being injured, earthquakes are really cool. I live in Vancouver, Canada, and have felt dozens some big, most small. Small (2-4 magnitude) earthquakes just feel like you're vibrating. One small earthquake I felt about 5 years ago shook my building in such a way that it emitted a very loud, bass sound for about 20 seconds. The big Seattle earthquake in 2001 (mag 6.8) made my desk bang against the wall like a slow drum beat. I felt a mag.8 earthquake in Alaska in 2002. I was closer to the epicenter, and that one really shook. It was hard to stand and I could hear stuff breaking, like tree branches. |
